Shark Attacks Are Analyzed Scientists are collecting a grow ing number of facts on man’s an cient enemy—the shark. An annual world-wide ' census of attacks on humans by the razor-toothed marauders is now kept at the Smithsonian Institu tion in Washington. Based on re ports analyzed by the Shark Re search Panel of the American Institute of Biological Sciences, last year’s record included 30 cases of “unprovoked” assault. There are some 300 varieties of sharks, ranging from 2 to 60 feet in length, says the National Geographic Society. About a doz en are considered particularly dangerous. The “man-eater” white shark has been known to upset small boats, maiming or killing occupants. Among other sharks of ill repute are the tiger, ham merhead, mackerel, and gray nurse. Found in sharks’ stomachs have been such assorted tidbits as tin cans, bricks, a fur coat, sack of coal, an alarm clock, and a full grown dog still wearing a collar. Most sharks favor warm and temperate oceans, but some roam far north. A few inhabit tropical fresh-water lakes and rivers. Vicious sharks appear to be moving north along American shores, perhaps because of warm ing ocean currents. Serious at tacks on swimmers have been reported off northern California and New England coasts. Casualties from shark bite may seem small compared to the mil lions of bathers, fishermen, and victims of shipwreck or air crash exposed to potential assault each year. But the flesh-eaters’ feroci ty makes them a fearsome men ace. Throughout the world, many beach owners in infested areas have dealt with the problem by setting up nets and employing lookouts to spot fins cutting the waves. Now being tried—with un certain promise—is an antishark “bubble screen’’ produced by air compressors and perforated pipes. To protect men cast adrift in perilous waters duiing World War II, the United States Navy developed a chemical shark repel lent in cake form. Carried by a downed flier or seaman, it could be dissolved in surrounding wa ter to give off odors repugnant to sharks. Shark Behavior Studied Since the war, oceanographers around the world have been prob ing the mysteries of shark be havior. As evidence mounts from laboratory and field work, the American Institute’s Research Panel hopes to find clues to at tacks in such factors as weather, temperatures, or the actions of prey. So far, findings are inconclu LOUIS KRAMM'S T. V. SERVICE Have Your Set Repaired Where The Repairs Can Be Made Right. MOSS The Wilmington Social Security Office has news for many farm landlords. “In past years,” according to Doris H. Moss of the Wilmington office, “farm landlords would re ceive social security credit for their income from the farm only if they personally were ‘materially participating' in the production, or management of the production, of the crops. Now', how'ever, a fram landlord who has an agent ‘ma terially participating’ can receive social security credit for his farm income. The agent may be a friend, relative, neighbor, or oth er person or firm representing the farm landlord.” “As a practical matter,” Mrs. Moss said, "this means that some farm owners who were previously found ineligibile for social security sive. Sharks seem to strike as often in clear as in cloudy weath er, although warm, murky, or night waters apparently present more danger. The color of cloth ing or skin may be unimportant; yet bright objects do invite shark attention. / Modern research emphasizes the well-known fact that sharks follow the faintest scent of blood, and are attracted to a thrash ing object. Thus swimmers should not panic, but move off with strong, deliberate strokes. The famous undersea explorer, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, uses a steel-barred, antishark cage to protect divers filming sharks. On one of his expeditions supported by the National Geographic Socie ty, Captain Cousteau found the cage useful in reverse. Working outside, he locked in it a huge but harmless grouper that had been playfully obstructing his view. ■ BOILING SPRING LAKES A DIVISION Of KEtVES BROADCASTING & DEVELOPMENT CORE LOTS 711N 1STKAT'KIX'S "N OTICE The undersigned.
