office at Supply Thursday to map
plans for the annual meeting: and
next year’s community develop
ment projects.

he has met this month with the
directors and officers of the other
five counties, Duplin, Bladen. Co
lumbus, New Hanover and Pen
der, and reported to the Bruns
wick officers that the other coun
ty officers were unanimous in
j their desire next year to place
j more emphasis on the develop
i ment of rural non-farm areas and
the youth program'.

College introduced Grover C. Dob
bins, of the State Extension Serv
ice, who is replacing Mintz as
counselor for the SENCland area.
R. W. “^ob” Dong of State
College spoke on the organization
of area development groups, and
pointed out that they did not
conflict with other local, area, or
state groups in that their prime
purpose is area development by
serving as a local co-operating
group with any and all others in
terested in development. “In
short," he said, “this group is a
bootstrap operation. a group
whose prime function is to plan
and then see that they them
selves, or with some other group
fulfill the plan -that, is to sav,
pull Brunswick County up by its
own bootstraps.”
Edward V. Mercer
Dies In Hospital
Edward V. Mercer, 75, a native
of Brunswick County, died Friday
night at a Wilmington hospital
after a brief illness. He was born
at Bolivia, June 7, 1886, the son
of the late Thomas J. and Hen
riette Swain Mercer.
Final rites were held Sunday

joyed a social at the home of
Mrs. H. K. Jeanneret on Monday
night of last week. Films of
Christmas Around the World were
shown and refreshments were
served. Mrs. Jeanneret is the wife
of the pastor of Concord Metho
dist Church.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Oscar Allen, son of Mrs. Fred
Allen of Ash, and a member of
the senior class of Pfeiffer Col
lege. participated in a concert of
carols presented last Thursday
night by the College Department
of Music. The Brunswick stu
dent sang tenor in a capella
choir. He is president of the sen
ior class and is an English major.
Jesse D. Danford
Dies On Wednesday
Jesse D. Danford, 86, retired
Bolivia farmer, died last Wednes
day at the home of his daugh
ter, Mrs. Lydia Swain of 117 Nun
St,, Wilmington, after a long ill
ness.
He was a native of Brunswick
County and the son of the late
John William and Harriet Jane
Greer Danford. He was a member
of Bethel Methodist Church near
Bolivia, from which final rites
were held Saturday at 2 p. m. by
the Rev. H. K. Jeanneret, with
burial in the Mercer family ceme
tery.
Survivors include Mrs. Swain
and three other daughters, Mrs.
Lora Keever of High Point, Mrs.
Nina Braswell of Wilmington
and Mrs. Emma Jane Rochelle of
Bolivia; five sons, Edwin of Or
lando, Fla., Royal of Bolivia,
Jesse D., Jr. of Wilmington,
James and Bryant Danford of
Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Amelia
Eichorn of Bolivia; 26 grandchild
ren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Viola Lewis
Dies In Hospital
Mrs. Viola A. Lewis, 41, wife
of Goley L. Lewis of Bolivia, died
Monday morning in Dosher Me
morial Hospital here.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 3 p. m. at Antioch
Baptist Church by the Rev. A.
B. Allen, with burial in the
church cemetery.
She is survived by her hus
band; a son, Goley Glen Lewis: a
brother. William B. Anderson; and
a sister, Mrs. Annie Lewis, all of
Bolivia.

chapel in Wilmington by the Revs.

done by flames and water to the
summer residence of the Graham
family, said to be from Lumber
ton.
