Slight Injuries
In 2-Car Wreck
A two-car collision injured
three men early Monday morning
in the Iceland section of the coun
ty, sending two of the injured to
a Wilmington hospital with in
juries described as painful but
not serious.
Highway Patrolman S. H.
Thomas, who investigated the ac
cident, said that a 1950 Plymouth
being operated by Lee Blake, 50
year-old white man of Leland,
RFD, headed east toward Wil
mington about 7:15 a. m. and on
Highway 74, collided with a 59
Ford being driven by Henry Lee
Patrick, Negro, about 30, when
Patrick, who was headed west to
ward Whiteville attempted to
make a left turn in front of the
approaching Plymouth.
The cars met head-on, accord
ing to Thomas. Both Blake and
Patrick suffered lacerations about
the head. A passenger in the Pat
rick car, identified as Charles
Fields, comDlained that his arm
was hurt. Thomas said Fields did
not go to the hospital.
No charges were made in the
accident, pending further inves
tigation.

is what Coach Doug Henderson
has working for him this year in
the way of Shallotte Pirate bas

And, to date, Henderson’s
charges have been romping along
their merry old ways in pre

back from the 1961 Lady Bucs,
while Forward Judy Moffitt, 5’5”

letter-winners on the local girls’
team.
Lost were Forwards Linda

He teams with Landis Stanley,

Trouble Results When Jealous
Suitor Takes Out For Revenge
Jealousy rode rampant down
Shallotte’s main street early Sun
day morning, and whereas no one
was hurt, it was a near miss and
a 35-year-old Shallotte Negro
faces a charge of careless and
reckless driving in Brunswick
County Recorder’s Court.
According to Shallotte's police
chief, Leon Galloway, the jealous
suitor was “lucky at that. He
might easily be facing an assault
with deadly weapon charge: to
wit, an automobile, had his driv
ing skill been greater."
Seems a soldier named Mitch
ell, who hails from Supply, was
riding a woman about on Sunday.
His companion was a “girl friend"
of Willie Bland of Shallotte, or
so Willie thought. Spying his
“girl friend” riding in the wrong
car, Willie took off in hot pur
suit. The chase led into Shallotte.
When the two vehicles drew
abreast of the Piggy-Wiggly mar
ket, Bland, who was driving a
1957 Ford, attempted to ram the
back of the Volkswagon driven

by Mitchell. Galloway said that
Mitcheli avoided collision "by
some fast work at the wheel”.
Bland drove about trying to
get better aim on the compact
car bearing his light of love and
his enemy. Watching the strange
duel, unbeknown to the principals,
was a threesome of law officers,
Deputy Sheriff Alex Gainey and
Night Policeman Ernest Hewett,
as well as Chief Galloway. In a
matter of seconds the law con
verged on Bland and had him
under arrest.
No charges were placed against
Mitchell.
