According to Shallotte's police chief, Leon Galloway, the jealous suitor was “lucky at that. He might easily be facing an assault with deadly weapon charge: to wit, an automobile, had his driv ing skill been greater." Seems a soldier named Mitch ell, who hails from Supply, was riding a woman about on Sunday. His companion was a “girl friend" of Willie Bland of Shallotte, or so Willie thought. Spying his “girl friend” riding in the wrong car, Willie took off in hot pur suit. The chase led into Shallotte. When the two vehicles drew abreast of the Piggy-Wiggly mar ket, Bland, who was driving a 1957 Ford, attempted to ram the back of the Volkswagon driven Tabor City; 13—open; 16—at Leland; 20—Wampee-Little River, here. Bland drove about trying to get better aim on the compact car bearing his light of love and his enemy. Watching the strange duel, unbeknown to the principals, was a threesome of law officers, Deputy Sheriff Alex Gainey and Night Policeman Ernest Hewett, as well as Chief Galloway. In a matter of seconds the law con verged on Bland and had him under arrest. No charges were placed against Mitchell.
