Visiting Teams Of Southport, Floyd’s Sweep Holiday Cage Twin-Bills
Dixon Big Gun As Dolphs
Trip Whiteville, 65-40
By JIGGS POWERS
HALLSBORO—Donald “Dunk
er” Dixon, the big Southport Dol
phin center with the feather-like
touch, was the main difference
here, Friday night, as Coach Pete
Lee’s Brunswick County quint
whipped Whiteville’s courageous
but undemanned Wolfpack, 65-40,
and swept both its games in the
First Annual Columbus Holiday
Invitational Doubleheader.
Floyd’s, S. C. downed Halls
boro, 50-45, in Friday’s other tilt.
Dixon, the 6’2” pivotman of
Lee’s Red-and-White brigade, had
scored 25 points, Thursday, as his
Dolphs vanquished Hallsbofo’s
Tigers, 59-50, in the ’header’s
opening game. Friday night,
against the boys from the Colum
bus capital, he raised his ante to
30 points and grabbed rebounds
a-plenty while doing the job.
He had defensive rebounding
help from Rodney Garner and
some fancy passing from Lefty
C. E. Murphy. Foxie Howard, a
reserve, tallied 10 points for the
winners.
For Coach Buck Jolly’s White
ville crew, a sub guard, Dempsey
Herring, sank 8 points and joined

Bill High and Robert Plasky in
defensive leadership.
WhifeviUe, welcoming their ace,
Robert Leder, back to the fold af
ter a day’s absence from the holi
day program, had Lady Luck
turn its back on them again as
Leder was injured in the first
quarter of the Southport game.
He was hurt as he hit on his
first field-goal and played only
briefly the remainder of the game,
due to a bad ankle. He scored but
6 points, well under the 20-plus
he had averaged in other games
of the early card.
The Pack fought gamely and
held onto an 11-11 tie at the end
of the first quarter, but the supe
rior speed of the Lee-coached
crew and the fine under-the
boards work of Dixon combined
to pull the Brunswick Countians
away from the co-hosts in the
final half.
Bill High hit on a push with
7:34 left in the first quarter to
give Whiteville a 2-0 lead and
Rodney Garner tallied at 7:10 to
tie it for Southport. Leder made
it 4-2, Whiteville with a two-han
der at 6:41 and began limping
immediately afterward. Dixon’s
first bucket tied it, 4-4, at 6:14
and Garner sank two fouls at
5:18 to make it 6-4, Southport.
Leder, though injured, gave his
club the lead at 11-10, on a jump
shot with 1:10 left in the quarter,
but Frankie Rogers hit on a foul
shot to make it 11-all at the turn.
Dixon, using his soft turnshot
after grabbing a rebound at 7:22,
tallied and the Dolphs were out
front, 13-11. Freddie Barkley
grabbed a rebound and stuffed
it in for the Wolves to tie the
count for them one more time at
6:25, 13-13, but Dixon chalked up

HALLSBORO—Mack Edwards, director of the
First Annual Columbus County Holiday Invitational
Basketball Doubleheader, held at Hallsboro’s gym,
Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28-29, said that the event
had been declared a success.
“So far as I know at this time,’’ Edwards said to
day, ‘we plan to make this holiday program an
annual affair for the sports-loving public of Colum
bus County and the entire area. 1 feel that it has
a definite purpose in our lives during the Christmas
time and I feel that it will grow with the years!”
Attendance was good, considering the short notice
the public was given about the Doubleheader being
held. Edwards decided to hold the program only a
week before Christmas. Next year, with more plan
ning and working time, it should be more successful.
The two invading teams, Southport’s Dolphins and
Floyd’s S. C. Wildcats, treated the co-hqst teams of
Hallsboro and Whiteville roughly in the two-night
event. Thursday night, Southport downed Hallsboro,
59-50 and Floyd’s beat Whiteville, 60-41. Friday
scores showed Southport beating Whiteville, 65-40;
and Floyd’s edging Hallsboro, 50-45.—(JP).
16-13, SHS. Marion Davis had a
2:18 basket to tie it at 24-24 and
Barkley was good at 1:48 for the
Pack’s final lead, 26-24. The Pack
managed to hold on until just 21
seconds before ther-half when Dix
on’s two-pointer sent the viistors
ahead at 31-30 as the rest-stop
came.
Southport led by only 33-30
when Plasky was forced to the
bench because of fouls with 5:12
left in the third quarter. His
height under the boards was miss
ed as SHS ran its advange to
42-32. 'Bill High became the sec
ond Pack player to hit the bench
because of four fouls at 3:09.
With these two out of the game,
temporarily, Southport ran its
margin to 47-32 by the close of
the third quarter.
High fouled out with 5:50 to go
in the game, with Southport lead
ing, 51-35. Then Dixon fouled out
with the Dolphins ahead, 59-39
and 2:27 to go. Plasky went out
with 2 seconds to go and the
Southport team holding the ad
vantage it held at the end, 65-40.

Of Doubleheader
By MIKE SIMMONS
HALLSBORO — The Southport
Dolphins, led by husky center
Donald Dixon, downed the Halls
boro Tigers, 59-50, here Thurs
day night in the opening game
of the First Annual Columbus In
vitational doubleheader.
Floyd’s, S. C., slapped White
ville, 60-41, in the second game.
Dixon pumped in 25 points and
snagged rebounds from all angles
in pacing the smooth-working
Dolphins. C. E. Murphy added 18
and played an outstanding floor
game. Ronald Faircloth racked
up 15 points for the host Tigers
and Donnie Rhodes had 10.
Coach Pete Lee’s Brunswick
County crew grabbed a 2-0 lead
at the 7:34 mark on Dixon’s soft
jumper but the Tigs came back
to make it 4-2 on successive bas
kets by Faircloth and Melvin
Brown. Southport hit a bucket
and a free throw to take a lead
they didn’t relinquish until mid
way the second quarter. They
built it to as much as five and
the score stood, 14-11, at the

Floyd’s Wins 50-459 As
Tigers Pull Near Upset
By MIKE SIMMONS
HAULSBORO—Floyd’s, S. C.,
edged Hallsboro, 50-45, here Fri
day night in a game that was a
thriller all the way. It was the
final contest of the first Annual
Columbus Holiday Invitational
doubleheader. 1
Southport downed Whiteville,
65-40, in the opening game of the
night.
The Wildcats from down South
hardly looked like the team that
one point at 6:10 in the second
quarter on Donnie Rhodes’ 20
foot jumper and regained the
lead, 19-18, a minute later on a
rebound shot by Snake Russell.
The lead changed hands again
and again and Dixon and Fair
cloth traded baskets. Then Dixon
hit again to give the winners a
lead which the Tigers never over
came. Murphy hit two straight
jump shots and the Dolphins
were on their way. Suddenly mov
ing into a full court press, they
built their lead to a solid 12
points at the 1:40 mark. They
held an eight point halftime lead,
35-27.
Coach Mack Edwards’ Tigers
came back in the third quarter
with a 1-3-1 zone and scored the
first six points of the frame to
pull within two. This was as close
as they got, however, as the
Tigers could not overcome the
sparkling play of Dixon and
Murphy.
With Murphy hitting long
jumpers and the 6-2 Dixon stuff
ing in those his mates missed,
the Dolphins were never threat
ened again.

swamped Whiteville, 60-41, the
night before but an aggressive
Hallsboro defense had much to do
with this. The Tigs ran a tight
sone defense most of the contest,
collapsing three and four men on
3-4 % pivotman Cary Elvington
when he had the ball. This bit of
strategy "held” the high-scoring
center to 14 points and forced the
Cats to shoot from the outside.
Albert Johnson opened the scor
ing with a jumper at the 6:20
mark, but' Jimmy Hines came
back for the Tigers with a bucket
to tie the count seconds later. El
vington sandwiched the next two
field goals around a Tiger free
throw and the score stood, 6-3,
Floyd’s. Ossie Buffkin hit for the
’Cats, Hines followed with an
other jumper, and Randy Shelly
hit as the buzzer sounded to make
the score, 12-8, Floyd’s at the
quarter mark.
Hines continued to have the hot
hand for the Tigers as he cut the
lead to two at the 7:40 mark of
the second quarter. Shelly hit
two straight sets to push the
lead up to six, but Hines and
Melvin Brown hit for the Tigs to
cut it back to two. Then Ronald
Faircloth knotted it at 16-all with
4:35 showing on the clock. A
Shelly bucket and two free throws
sent the ’Cats back in front by
four. Johnny FormyDuval and El
vington traded baskets, the Tigs
hit a couple of free throws, and
Elvington hit again and the score
stood, 26-20 FHS, at the half.
Floyd’s maintained its six-point
lead throughout the third quarter
and held a 38-32 lead going into
the fourth frame. *
The Wildcats built up their
biggest lead, 12 points, early in
the ’ final quarter as they hit
three straight buckets. Hallsboro
began to move at this point and
fought back to cut the lead to
one. 46-45, at the 1:10 mark with
Faircloth and Brown leading the
surge. The Tigs could not score
again, however, as the ’Cats froze
the ball and hit four free throws
to wind up the scoring.
Floyd’s had four men in double
figures. Randy Shelley led the
attack with 15, but he was fol
lowed closely by Cary Elvington
with 14, Danny Hammond with
13, and Albert Johnson with 12.
Melvin Brown of the Tigers was
high man in the game with 16.
Jimmy Hines had 10.
