World's Hidden Wonders New microscopes have the' power to show man the tiniest viruses that afflict him, the genes that govern his heredity, and even the atoms making up the world around him. The latest electron microscopes can distinguish bits of matter 1|50,000.000 of an inch in diame ter. The field emission . icros cope, a highly specialized elec tronic device, can see objects half again as small, thereby pinpoint ing individual atoms. But scientists are still unsatis field. They want to see smaller things, like the atomic nucleus, which is only l| 100,000 the size of the atom itself. No microscope yet invented can do that. Monsters Revealed The micrcscopes reveal a phan tasmagoria of both beauty and beast. The crystalline structure of zinc sulphide, magnified 4,500 times, suggests a modernistic city. A mouse hair, enlarged 4, 200 times, resembles a tree trunk. Crystals of magnesium oxide, magnified 70,000 times, ap pear as precious gems. Terrifying battles are observed. Bacteria-destroying viruses as sault their tiny prey. The viruses jab their needlelike tails into a bacterium and squirt nucleic acids inside. The acids combine to form new viruses in the host. Such dramas have more than passing interest for medical men. For years they battled the polio virus without knowing what their enemy looked like. The electron microscope finally provided a por trait of the Lilliputian killer. It is a sphere only 1|125,000 of an inch in diameter—smaller than a human gene. 710 S. 17»h RO 2-3362 WILMINGTON, N. C. C. microscope was not invented un til 1590 when a Dutchman, Zacharias Janssen, made one by accident. A century later, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, also a Dutchman, startled the scientific world with reports that little animals could be seen in a drop of rain water. About the same time, Robert Hooke of England found that living tissue is made up of "little boxes filled with air or water.” He called them “cells”—a name that stuck. Optical microscopes were de veloped rapidly. By the late 19th century, however, scientists real ized that the wave length of light set an absolute limit to the small est of objects they could hope to see. Human ingenuity eventually found a way around the obstacle. In 1924 Louis de Broglie of France theorized that electrons have a wave length of only 1(100,000 that of light. Scientists began speculating that a mag netic field could focus electron waves just as lenses focus light waves. In 1932 electron microscopes wrere built by L. Marton in Bel gium and by E. Brueche and H. Johansson in Germany. In three years the new instrument had achieved better results than POWELL'S Funeral Home SHALLOTTE, N. C. 24 Hr.—Ambulance Service—24 Hr. OXYGEN EQUIPPED JAMES E.
