Shallotte’s Boys Eliminate Wolves By JIGGS POWERS CHADBOURN — In the best game of the opening -round, Shal lotte’s Pirate boys used a 21 point final quarter to edge past Whiteville's courageous Wolfpack, 56-47, in the 4th Annual Wacca maw AA Basketball Tournament, Tuesday night. Coach Buck Jolly’s Wolves ran red-hot midway the second period to lead at one time by 13 points (24-11) and were out front at halftime with a 25-19 advantage. Then, Doug Henderson’s Pirates roared back to clip the Columbus outfit with a surge in the third period that netted them a 35-32 margin at its close and finished the contest with a 21-15 last pe riod. The Pirate ace, Robert Gallo way, held to 7 points in the first half by the splendid defensive work of All-Columbus Robert Leder, still managed to lead his winning club’s move with 17 points. Most of Galloway’s points came on foul shots in the closing quarter of the tilt. Landis Stan ley, who joined Mike Stanley as the Buc defensive leader, hit 13 additional Shallotte points. Leder, in addition to turning in perhaps his top defensive show ing, also led his Wolfpack mates with 19 points to be high scorer of the contest, while Byron Wyche, sophomore guard, played UP PLY Highway 117 North, Wilmington N. Shallotte ran up a 3-0 lead on Mike Stanley’s free throw at 7:34 and Landis Stanley’s push at 6:59, before Leder hit his first jumper at 6:44 Galloway’s turnshot made it 6-2 and the SHS lead ran to 8-2 before the Pack began to move. Leder’s long 1-hander with 1:36 to go in the period tied things at 9-9 and Marion Davis’ swished in a push at 1:05 to make it 11-9, Pack. Davis repeated with 3 seconds to go to leave the Pack in front, 13-9, at the quarter. Whiteville’s hot streak came after Robert Plasky had hit for the Pack and Galloway had! dropped in a brace of free throws to leave the count at 15-11, WHS. Byron Wyche was the featured star of the span which saw the Pack run its advantage to 24-11 Of the 9 points scored by the Biue-and-Whites in running up this margin, the smooth-working soph poured in 8 of them on 4 long sets from well out behind the circle, some from near center court. But, Shallotte's Pirates never gave up and actually started their winning comeback in the second period as Galloway hit at 2:24, Landis Stanley had another and James Russ a pair of buckets to cut the Whiteville margin to 25-19 at halftime. Bobby Hubbard’s 3-pointer at 4:30 pulled the Bucs within strik ing distance and Landis Stan ley’s tip-in bucket with 4:12 in the third period put Shallotte in front 28-27. The Pack then found themselves in the middle of a more than 5-minute scoring drought, as they failed to tally again until the Bucs led by 35-27 and wound up ahead, 35-32 as the quarter closed. Wyche’s shot at 7:50 in the finale pulled the Pack within a point (35-34) of the leaders, but that was as close as the White ville team was to get as Gallo way scored 8 of his 17 points, half on free throws, in the final 3:08 of the game. QUEEN OF HEARTS for 1962 Betty Reeves of Nakina, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul M. Reeves, is shown receiving her crown from the 1961 queen Louise Towne. Her crowning climaxed the “Queen of Hearts” dance held Saturday night in the National Guard Armory which was sponsored by the county Heart asso ciation. Proceeds from the dance went to the county Heart fund, which is now soliciting funds in its annual drive. Mrs. Mary K. Scoggins is the Heart Fund chairman for the county. Lady Bucs Down Wolf lets CH ADJOURN — Shal lotte’s Lady Bucs clipped the Whitevill'e Wolflets, 42-30, in the opening game of the 4th Annual Waccamaw Athletic Association Basketball Tour nament here, Tuesday night, and advanced to the semi finals round. Coach Doug Henderson’s girls from Brunswick County used the first half as a springboard for their triumph, outpointing the Wolflets, 17-8 in the first quarter, and led, 32-18, at the half. Coach Dick McCleney’s Lady Panthers led at halftime, 22-17 and kept on to wind up their slate with a 15-5 overall mark. The Panth boys finished 5-15. Sue Elixson led the Chadbourn girls with a total of 16 points; Sally Ward had 11, Frances Smith 10 for Southport. In boys’ play, Clive Dosher had 18 and Rodney Garner 12 for Southport’s winners, while Buddy Peal hit 26 for Chadbourn to be top man in the game. In the boys’ game, Southport led all the way. The show is scheduled to be held Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4, at the Whiteville high school cafeteria under the direction of William W. Delaney, show chair man. It has been arranged with the co-operation with the American Camellia Society and the North Carolina Camellia Society. Show arrangements are in charge of Mrs. J. K. Powell, Mrs. David Smith and Mrs. George R. McNeill. Mrs. Melba Hinson will be in charge of awards, Mrs. William W. Delaney of clerks, and Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Foster^ will direct the Hospitality committee. W. H. McClure is responsible for classifications, Mayor J. K. Powell of judges, Oliver Prince of commercial exhibits, and Mrs. Marion Martin will be in charge of signs and posters. Entries will be accepted be tween 8 and 10 a. m. Tommy McGlamery Leads JV Scoring The Southport junior varsity scored a 61-39 victory over the Leland JV team. Monday after noon here in Southport. The vic tory gave the Southport boys a 5-1 conference record and clinch ed the county title. The loss drop ped the Leland boys to a 4-2 record and the second place berth for the tournament. Tommy McGlamery led the fast-breaking offense with 28 points. Most of these came on drives and accurate 10 foot jump shots. Following Tommy in the scoring were Kenneth King with 12 points and Jerry Swain with 8. Southport plays Bolivia in the opening round of the JV tourna ment next Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock.
