Leaders Needed For 4-H Work By Aubry Johnson Thirty-five years ago when only a few families had cars, it was hard to tell where farming ended and our towns began. In fact, most every family did some farm ing and raised some livestock even inside our rural towns. We used wood to heat and cook with, laundry was done by hand, meat was slaughtered and processed at home. Then there was the neces sity of every member of the family to assume responsibility and do his share of the ever present chores. Now it is no lon ger true even on some of our farms. Now many of our children grow up unaware of responsibility, with little knowledge of how to earn money, and no way to acquire practical experience in working with their minds and hands. This is not their fault. There is al ready an organization in our county that can help teach our youngsters responsibility, and give them practical experience in many areas of endeavor. The 4-H Club organization is reaching a very small percentage of our young people in Brunswick County, because it lacks adult leadership. Our Extension Service workers are ready and willing to assist in organizing 4-H Clubs in any community desiring its aid and willing to provide adult lead ership. Not one of our youth should be denied the benefits 4-H can provide. We have the best young people, but borrowing a 4-H slogan, “The Best Can Be Better”, with our adult assistance. We heard talks by the State 4-H Leader and State Wild life Leader, also demonstrations on water safety, casting and fire arms safety. Each day we had classes on soil and water conser vation, plants and plant life and discussions on what we had done j in our wildlife project. On the last day of camp we all loaded on trucks and went on a tour through the State Wildlife Food Experiment area and to the Federal Fish Hatchery nearby. This was very interesting to us all. Each day at camp we had a recreation period and swimming. girls to achieve and to be recog nized as indiivduals worthy with ability. Let us as adults help them to achieve this goal. j At night there was a time for | games and fun ending with Ves | pers, then taps. First there are wonderful days of fun and the opportunity to meet new ! people and make new friends. : Second there are things learned I about nature and various things i everyone needs to know. Third, ! and most of all I think it creates j prestige within a person. The opinion of 4-H Camp we got was something like this, it was a place Where boys and girls interested in 4-H gp to learn, work, and have wholesome fun.
