Brunswick Between Bookends \ By Eugene Fallon LOVE IS A WOUND. By Worth Tuttle Hettdon. Crown Publishers, New York. 46“ pp. Here is a rather strange novel. Ahich just misses being great. On he flyleaf is inscribed: “For “ousin .Augusta Roberts who nade the past' vivid for me." It vas signed by the author. The inscription was directed to i Southport lady now deceased. Ihe author of this brooding novel spent some time on several visits vith her cousin here. The book vas published ten years ago. Briefly, the story concerns two sisters who love the same man— a minister. The man of God plays hard to get, and wisely so, for the sisters might have stepped from the tormented mind of an Eugene O’Neil or a Tennessee Williams. The prize himself is not so placid or self-contained as one would expect of a man of cloth; but the sympathy of the reader remains with him to the end, be- ; cause of the semi-evil maehina- i tions of the matrimonial-bent sis- ! ters. If the plot sounds compli cated, it is; but the author pos sesses a greater share of writing ] skill than is usually encountered Food+own Super Market and Shopping Center JUNCTION HI-WAY 17 and 211 G. A Full Line Of Ouality Building Materials Dial RO 2-3339 in novels by women based on emotional things, and here-and there throughout the book are passages of real power. The scene of the impassioned tale is Southport, thinly disguis ed as “Bayport”, which in turn, is said to be “some 25 miles from Wilmington, N. C." so, you see, there’s little doubt left as to where the story is supposed to have unfolded. The circa is the late Nineteenth Century, in the ; 1880's to be more explicit, and incidentally the Southern collo quialisms in this one ring true and do not appear as perverted Uncle Remusisms, ' even when colored characters talk under the stress of extraordinary events. Inveterate movie-goers who may recall O'Neil’s “Strange In terlude” will find much to re mind them of that drama in these pages. Much of what trans pires in Love is a Wound un winds through the unspoken thoughts of the characters. This is especially true of the Rev. David Hummiston. Without pointing a finger at the author, it seems pretty clear that she has read Walt Whit man. There’s nothing wrong with this (every aspiring writer should, j you know). The great poet’s in fluence is obvious in such pass ages as the following: “A bright fellow, quiet and in dustrious when not under the in fluence of monkey-rum. He made his peace with God and was resigned to his fate—his soul saved but his body wasted . . The last sentence smacks of the Sage of Camden, and might, indeed, come direct from “Au tumn Rivulets”. The weakest portion of the novel, it seemed to me, was it ending. After all the sweatings and ravings, it is not clear, at the end, who, if anyone got Dave Hummiston. Southport readers may or may not like the story, but I think few natives will find fault with the author's treatment of their town. Treatment such as the following: “Every day I live here I’m struck anew by the fact that nothing much changes in Bayport but the faces of the people who walk these oystershell sidewalks . . . yes, it’s a sweet, stable old town. I doubt if there’s another like it in the country and I’m j thankful things worked out as they did and sister got her way; about retiring to this peaceful, memory-filled spot . . .” Summing up, I’ve read better books, but on the other hand have read hundreds of worse ones. The appeal of this one is, I think, A new camellia variety, “Briga doon," is offered by a California nursery. Brigadoon is the result of a cross using “salvenensis x Prin cess Baciocchi.” This variety is reported as being distinguished by its precocious blooming habit and profusion of extra large fuschia pink blooms. The flowers have 12-15 petals, delicately scalloped, measuring up to 5 inches across. An earlier introduction by the same nursery, “Flirtation,” is a hybrid from “japonica x salvenen sis." This variety is reported as having complete sun tolerance, which makes it especially desir able as a colorful landscape plant. FROM THE question box: "Someone told me I could con trol the peach tree borer with DDT. t tried this but it did not work.” There are two species of borers attacking peach trees in North Carolina, both of which can be controlled with DDT. The lesser peach tree borer usually feeds on the limbs, or high up on the trunk, while the peach tree borer usually causes damage near the base of the tree. The timing of sprays is the key to successful control. It is stand ard practice for commercial grow ers to spray the trunks and limbs of trees July 1, August 1 and Sept. 1 with DDT. Parathion and Thiodan may also be used. The only remedy now is to re move the peach tree borers from the base of the tree. (This meth od is rot practiced for the lesser borer on the limbs). Remove the soil from the base of the tree, and the gummy exudate. Locate the tunnels, cutting as little as possible, and kill the borers by pushing a flexible wire into the tunnel. “I WAITED too late to prune my Muscadine vines and they are bleeding. Will this kill the vines?” No. We have no information to show that bleeding is harmful. When the temperature is low, bleeding will stop, and begin again when the temperature rises. When the leaves begin to grow, the bleeding will stop. IT SEEMS almost impossible to keep an error from creeping into the column from time to time. The noted scholor in the Hebrew language, Robert Young, who arranged a monumental concordance of the Bible, and wrote an excellent translation, says that Selah is a musi cal note, indicating a pause in the singing. Punctuation marks are used today to indicate pauses and em phasis, they are observed but not pronounced in reading. Selah may be omitted from the reading without changing the meaning.
