Fulton, sales I vice president of the H. E. Craw I ford company, announced here j today. It is the first step toward automation of the tobacco har vest, he added. ) Known as “The Hawk,” the ! machine is operated by a crew I of three. One person spreads the ] tobacco on a conveyor belt, the | second puts down a stick and a ! second layer of tobacco, while the j third removes the finished sticks for transfer to the barn. The machine has already been field proven in Canada, Fulton said, . with 55 machines tieing 1,500,000 sticks during the 1961 harvest. L. B. Johnson, Jr. of Farmville, tobacco farmer who used one of the machines last year, Fulton said, reported a saving of 75 per cent in labor at the barn, or $4S . per day. “With this machine we tied I more tobacco per stick, had less , breakage before and after cur : ing, more uniform curing, and | the string was far easier to re move after curing,” Johnson said. “In fact, the string goes on in a chain stitch, so that you re move it like pulling the string on a fertilizer or feed sack. "The Hawk takes care of 25 acres of tobacco in a five-day week,” Johnson continued. "One machine will pay for itself on a 15-acre allotment. Farmers who have allotments of 5 or 10 acres might want to go together and buy one—or get, a machine and do contract work for their neigh I bors.” I Want Ad NOTICE Some of the citizens who have loved ones buried in the Galloway Cemetery at Sup j Ply have arranged to employ a : grounds keeper for year-round care of this property.
