County Agricultural Agent
A. S. Knowles Recom
mends That Brunswick
Families Plant More Of
Them
With the break in the weather
farm families v ill start planting
their spring and summer vege
table gaidens which offer wond
erful variety for the table and
their value is without, estimate
in health benefits.
A. S. Knowles, County Agri
cultural Agent, had the following
advices for the home vegetable- ;
gardener. 1
One-half acre is usually utilized
by the average farm family in
Brunswick County, and will pro
duce enough for table and for
freezing purposes. Farm families
should select a good variety of
vegetables, beginning with good
seed which has been treated a
gainst seed-borne diseases. Most
gardens, said Knowles, are not
properly fertilized.
The average garden soil should
receive an application of 1.500
to 2.000 pounds of fertilizer per
acre. Knowles suggested that for
best results, the following analy
sis should be used: 6-8-6, 6-6-12,
and 8-8-8. In addition, one to
two-hundred pounds of Nitrate
of Soda, or ANL, should be
broadcast per acre. At first sign
of insects, added Knowles, treat
ment should be instituted with
any good insectide.
