Honored; Johnson New WAA Prexy

High School, is the new president
of the Waccamaw Athletic As
sociation for the 1962-63 session;
having been elected at the spring
Awards Meeting of the WAA
held in the local cafeteria last
(Wednesday) night.

were honored at the Awards
meet, with trophy presentations
being made with awards borrow
ed from the Shallotte trophy
case because this year’s News
Reporter awards had failed to ar
rive in time for the meeting.
The new trophies will be pre
sented upon arrival.
Johnson, in his first year as
Shallotte principal after having
served a long tenure as an ath
letic coach at Bladenboro, New
Hanover High School, Roanoke
Rapids, and other places, succeeds
J. W. Black of Bladenboro as
president of the loop.
B. S. Brigman of Whiteville
was named to replace Johnson as
vice-president; while Randall
Burleson of Tabor City was elect
ed secretary-treasurer to succeed
E. H. Cooper, Jr. of Chadbourn.
James H. Baker presented his
Eastern Carolinas Officials Asso
ciation sportsmanship trophy in
football to Coach Frank Thomp
son of Bladenboro on behalf of
his Bulldog team, its fans and
coaches. Baker also recognized
Coaches Dick McCleney and
Woody Wilson of Chadbourn,
whose school will receive the bas
ketball sportsmanship award
when it arrives. These trophies
are given to schools adjudged best
by vote of the offiicals who work
their games.
The 2nd Annual WAA Baseball
Tournament was set for Bladen
’ boro's Spinner Park on Monday,
May 7 and Thursday, May 10,
with competitors to be the top
four teams according to regular
season standings.
President Johnson asked the
group to think along the lines
of doing something about cur
tailing girls' basketball and also
to think about examination weeks
of all schools in setting dates
for next year’s WAA cage tour
ney. so as not to work a hard
ship on schools and their stu
dents.

Johnson of Shallotte. E. H.
Cooper, Jr. of Chadbourn was re
ported ill. The new member of
the conference, Hallsboro, was
not represented.

Whiteville's Wolfpack swept to

sociation track title here yester
day (Wednesday) with a victory
in the annual WAA Track and
Field Meet.

Individual high man was White

up 15% points with a first-place
in the 100-yard dash; two sec
onds in the high jump and the
low hurdles, a tie for 2nd and
3rd in the 220; and fourths in
the high hurdles and shotput.
Next came Leon Edward Fon
vielle of Tabor City, who won
the 220 and low hurdles and a
second in the 100, for 13 points;
Chadbourn’s Charlie Heye scored
12% with a first in the 440, sec
onds in the shot and disc and
a tie for 3rd and 4th in the 100

Winner With Event To Go
Whiteville had the meet actual
ly won prior to the last event,
the mile relay, but picked up a
second-place in this event, won by
defending Shallotte.
New records were set by John
Cox of Chadbourn in the 880,
whose victory was especially
sweet since his time of 2:08
snapped the 1958 mark set by his
brother, Reggie Cox, which was
2:13.5; Charlie Heye of Chad
bourn in the 440, his 52.3 break
ing the mark of 54.9 established
by Chadboum’s John Robinson in
1960.
Six New Marks
Sammy Williams of Tabor City
broke the old discus mark of
113’ held since 1958 by Oleun
Stephens, also of Chadbourn, with
his new toss of 118'10”; Larry
Freeman’s broad jump of 19’3
3-4” broke the one set by Charlie
Heye last year of 18’11”. Mike
Stanley of Shallotte pole vaulted
10’6” to set a new record for the
loop and replace one set by Kel
ton Williams of Chadbourn in
1960, when he vaulted 10’ flat.
Mike Stanley high jumped 5’6”
to tie the record set by himself
and three others—-Allison Holden
of Shallotte, Tim Blackmon and
Marion Davis, both of Whiteville
—at the 1961 meet.
