Golf Professional Employed At Boiling Springs Course Marvin Watson, former Bruns wick County resident and newly assigned golf professional at Boil ing Spring Lakes, will begin his duties at the nearby resort de velopment Monday. Watson, pres ently assistant pro of the Muni cipal Golf Course in Wilmington, was introduced to members of the press and local golfing enthusiasts earlier this week. The personable young golfer, who comes to his new position highly recommended, said his im mediate duties will be to “shape up and finalize’’ work on the Boiling Spring Lakes course. He announced that golf lessons will begin as soon as the new course is ready for play. Watson is the winner of several Carolina Golf Association tourna ments, and won second-place in the Little Azalea Festival Open in 1960. He said his brightest moments in golfing have been the four aces, or holes-in-one, he has shot. Three of these shots, considered to be the most highly prized goal of most golfers, oc curred last year. In commenting on his new duties, Watson said that he was looking forward to beginning work at Boiling Spring Lakes. He declared that the new course will be one of the finest in this area, and that it should develop into one of the state's outstand ing courses. I suppose that bids were received, that they were opened and that possibly contracts were awarded. What I would like to know is who made the bids? How much did they come to? And, most important, when will work begin? The bills will be paid with tax money, and I think that the taxpay ers deserve to know the answers to these questions. If I am nominated and appointed to serve on the Board of Edu cation as representative from the Southport School District, I will make it my business to see that the citizens and taxpayers are informed of the expenditures as well as of the needs for the Public Schools of Bruns wick County. Sails Open Here Sunday Against Hampstead Nine By FOXY HOWARD The Cape Fear League, eight teams strong this year, will begin official play Sunday afternoon with the opening game scheduled at Southportis Taylor Field be tween the Southport Sails and the Hampstead entry. Game time is 3 o’clock and Bobby McKeith an has been named by Manager Preston Bryant as the opening day hurler. With a strong high school team from which to draw their re serves, the Sails look good in the pre-season work outs. Last year Southport took their first six games before dropping one to South Wilmington. This season they hope to go even further be fore they hit the losing bracket. All of the players on the Sails roster this year live in Southport as Manager Bryant feels that it was unnecessary to draw on out of-town talent to field a winning team. A lot like Casey Stengel, Manager Bryant refers to his players as the “fellers” and is quick to point out the stronger points of each. He has a lot of baseball savvy and does not hesi tate to shuffle his line-up to fit the opposing pitcher's weaknesses. With a roster two and three deep at almost every position the fans in Southport can expect to see a lot of good baseball at Taylor Field on Sunday afternoons this summer. The line-up for this Sunday afternoon will probably be Ron Allen or Foxy Howard at second base, Wayne Ludlum at first, Mc Keithan on the mound, John Carr Davis catching, Agnew Fulcher at third, Paul Cochran holding down the shortstop position and Jerry Spencer, Gene Russ and Ronnie Hood in the outfield. The infield reserves include Dick Brendle, Bobby Spencer and Leonard Lewis. Gehrig Spencer is on tap for outfield duty; and Jerry Wayne Spencer can take over behind the plate at any time. When Doug Watts gets home from his teaching job man- | ager Bryant will have additional talent for that position. The Sails second game will be a return match with Hampstead at the latter's home field on Sunday, May 20th. Manager Bryant is no novice at the game of baseball. He play ed for a number of years in the old Wilmington City League for such teams as the Atlantic Coast Line, the Wilmington Light In fantry, and the Winter Park nines. He once held down the catching duties for the strong U. S. Dredge “Comstock” team playing, and whipping, some of the toughest Army Engineer teams in the country. Bryant re cently retired from the Army Corp of Engineers, but has not retired from the game of base ball. At a recent meeting of Cape i Fear League Managers and Offi cials it was decided to have the annual All-Star Game in South port this year. The All-Star Game is customarily played on the 4th of July with the first place team playing against the standout players from the other seven en tries. Regular league play will end in early August after each: team has played fourteen games, seven at home and seven or. the road. In addition to the regularly scheduled league games the Sails plan to play several exhibition games at Taylor Field against j other semi-pro teams in the area I such as Whiteville, Riegelwood and possibly some service teams. j Waccamaw Loop W L Pet. KILLED TO DATE The state department of motor vehicles reports that 369 persons have been killed to date as com pared to 347 for the same com parable period last year. FOR BOARD OF EDUCATION Shallotte School District ROZELL HEWETT r If anyone wants to know why I am running for the Board of Education, the above picture shows four of the best reasons I know. My wife and I have two sons and two daughters. Three are now in school, and we hope for dll of them to receive an education in the public schools of Brunswick county. I feel like it is my duty to help raise the standards of our schools to the point where our students can enter any college in the country and hold their own in competition with boys and girls from schools in any other area. Sell At Home — Trade At Home For County Commissioner I think that with proper business manage ment it will be possible to improve and expand services now provided by Brunswick County with out having to raise the tax rate. Before the revaluation program, our tax val uation was 15-milliori dollars. Now it is more than 30-million. I understand that between 1 -million and 2-million in valuation will'be added from this year’s listing. If we insist upon edging up on the tax rate, we will drive away the out-of-county investors and builders who are helping to make Brunswick one of North Carolina’s fastest growing counties. E. C. BLAKE CONGREVE JACKSON For Judge Recorders Court Brunswick County Not being a Politician or having ever run for office I was told I would get my eyes opened. In traveling through the county seeking votes it is unbelievable the Gossip I hear about some of those formerly holding office, unethical violations, illegal acts, paticularly taking bribes. If I had been in office and had taken bribes, I not only would not run again but would move to another State. Some Candidates run on Previous Records in office, others run on what they promise to do if elected, I am one of the latter, and respectfully ask for your vote.
