SERVICE Where GOOD SERVICE and COMPLETE HONESTY Has Made A Business, and Where The Same Policies Will Keep The Business Growing. Serving Brunswick County 115 W. Nash St. — Southport, N. C. — GL 7-5891 THE MIDWATCH By CHIEF CUNNINGHAM The Officer in Charge of Navy Recruiting in North Carolina re cently informed this station that | many quotas fdr Navy high school graduate training pro grams have not been filled. We’d like to point out that the training available under some of these programs is the best available anywhere, and in many cases, such as training available under the nuclear propulsion program, the only training being provided in the United States today. It requires little vision to realize that anyone who has been train ed in the nuclear field can just about name his own terms for the j next sever al years. High school graduates who may qualify for this program are neglecting the opportunity of a lifetime if they don't jump on the bandwagon now. Harvey Alvis Smith of South port and Herman Strickland of Winnabow were recently enlisted in the Navy. Both were enlisted under the guaranteed technical school training program for quali fied high school graduates for training in the electronics field. We expect great things from both boys, since they’ve clearly indi cated they have the potential for real accomplishment. We think they’ve chosen wisely, too, since it’s almost a fact that you can’t brush your teeth anymore until an electronics technician has cer tified your toothbrush. Speaking of teeth and toothbrushes reminds us that the Navy also offers out standing training for both men and women in the field of Dental forge their names, which he did. This eventually led to the other boys request that he ask Marrtle and Maris to attend the banquet that the Little League team was to have. He said that he could get them to come, but to do this he knew he had to go talk to them in person. So he hid in the rear of a friend’s truck and went to St. Petersburg. He finally got to see Mantle and Maris but they told him that they could not come. They ex plained that he had lied when he said he knew them and going would only make his lie seem real. He then went home and was faced with the task of telling his friends the truth. When he finish ed confessing to the term, hie , father announced that the New York Yankees had invited all the players and their •families to visit spring training camp for a day It was a relief to see Mantle and Maris as themselves doing what they can do best, insteac of acting seriously. The whole 1 family will enjoy seeing this | movie, especially the Little Lea I guers. 200 Castle Hayne Rd. WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA PHONE RO 3-10/A p, O. Technology. We hate to miss an opportunity to mention these things. We were also informed that a WAVE recruiter has been assign ed to the Raleigh area at long last, so if any of you girls have hesitated to inquire about enlist ing in the Navy because you were reluctant to talk to a man, we don’t really believe you’re girls. Not Brunswick County girls, any how. At any rate, the WAVE recruiter in Raleigh will be glad to correspond with anyone inter ested in the WAVE program. Just flag old Chief Cunningham down any Thursday and he'll put you in touch. The publicity department of Navy Recruiting in Raleigh an nounced that some new film is available for showing to any group interested. Included are “Sub Killers”, “Beneath Navy Wings” and “A Salute to Arleigh Burke". Any group interested in one of these firms can contact the Navy Recruiter in Wilming ton, who will do his level best to get them for you. So long for this midwatch. I’ll see most of you next Thursday, since I only got enough blue berries for two pies last week, and they’re gone already. Soybean Price Support Is Set For 1962 North Carolina far mers will be required to main tain their 1959-60 average acre age of conserving and idle land on the farm in order to be eligible for price support on soybeans. According to Ralph Price, man ager of the Brunswick County ASC office, this requirement is aimed at insuring that additional soybean production will be on acreage that has been used for crops in abundant supply such as wheat, cotton, coin, grain sorghum, and other feed crops rather than from land now in conserving uses or idle.
