Cars Being Driven With Boat
Trailers Pose Mew Problems
With thousands of North Caro
linians winding up in Brunswick
County every weekend this sum
mer, the tricky art of maneuver
ing a boat trailer in heavy traf
fic calls for expert dry land
seamanship, cautions the N. C.
State Motor Club.
Ignorance of the basic rules for
transporting a boat, can quickly
develop into a traffic, hazard with
a first-class accident potential,
warns Thomas B. Watkins, presi
dent of the motor club .and the
National Automobile Association,
but trailering an outboard rig

becomes easy and safe if the fol
lowing pointers are observed:
(1/ Start slowly and continue
to apply power steadily but grad
ually.
(2) When stopping, give your
self plenty of space. Get the feel
of the additional distance required
to stop because of the boat trail
er, and check any tendency for
the unit to '“snake” or whip when
the brakes are applied. If the
trailer has brakes, apply them
first and then alternate between
trailer and car.
13) Trailer wheels will usually
track inside those of the car on
sharp turns. The variation de
pends on the size of the trailer
and length of the tongue. When
making right-angle turns, travel
several feet from the curb, then
straight for the intersection be
fore making the pullover. Putting
your rig through a few practice
sharp-turn gyrations and studying
the tire marks to ascertain the
safe turning arc will prove most
helpful.
(4) Practice is the key to suc
cessful control of the backing-up
maneuver. Go slowly. Learn not
tc oversteer, for you can't recover
if you go too far. Pull up a few
feet as soon as you see the trailer
moving in the wrong direction
and corr ect the backing up. Back
ing a trailer into a spot takes
I practice, and the following steps
I may be helpful to the novice:
(at Have the car and trailer
in a straight line with the area
you intend to enter.
(b) Place your hand at the
bottom of the steering wheel and
turn t he wheel in the direction
you want the back end of the
trailer to go. In other words, if
you want the trailer to go right,
steer left. When the trailer begins
to swing in the desired direction,
straighten out the car wheels and
you will be able to continue to
back in the smooth arc you de

(c) Timing is important. There
is usually delayed action between
your movement of the steering
wheel and the resultant effect on
the direction which the trailer
moves. The degree of delay varies
in different car-and-trailer hook
ups and must be understood and
allowed for by the driver.
(5) Finally, don’t get rattled
and always play it safe. Exer
cise the three C’s of driving—
caution, courtesy and common
sense—at all times.
