A tentative budget for the City of Southport for
the year 1962-63 has been approved by members
of the Board of Aldermen and Ii6s open for inspection
at the City Hall until August 9, 1962. If there is no
objection raised at or before that time it will be fnally
adopted.

Social Security
Changes Listed
A recent change in the social
security law has made hundreds
of farm landlords eligible for
benefits although they do not
materially participate in the ac
tual operation of their farms.
Under this new provision, a
farm landlord may get social se
curity credit for his net income
from a farm he owns even if his
participation in the operation of
the farm is through an agent or
an employee.
Formerly, a farm landlord had
to take a personal part in the
actual operation or management
of the farm in order to have his
income from the farm count for
social security.

have about the recent change in

explains “material participation"
in detail.
Men In Service
Cortis Smith Jr., whose parents
live at Supply, recently was pro
moted to private first class in
Korea where he is serving with
the 7th Infantry Division. Smith,
a teletype operator in the infan
try’s Company A, entered the
Army in November 1961 and com
pleted basic training at Fort
Jackson, S. C. The 20-year-old
soldier is a 1958 graduate of
Brunswick County T r a i n in g
School, Southport.
Billy It. Faulk, whose foster
mother, Mrs. Penny F. Duval,
lives at Freeland, recently was
promoted to private first class
in Korea where he is serving
with the 31st Infantry. Faulk,
an armorer in the infantry’s Com
pany B, entered the Army in
September 1961 and completed
basic training at Fort Jackson,
S. C. The 28-year-old soldier is a
1954 graduate of Waccamaw High
School, Ash.

lotte, recently was promoted to
specialist five in Germany, where
he is assigned to the 535th En
