Leland had the biggest bats as they rapped out 17 safeties, in cluding. a double by Ray Scott and triples by Dale Williams and Roger Ganey, to only 12 base knocks for the Sails. The big blow for Southport was a homer by Jerry Spencer in the first inning with two men on base, the first home-run by a Sail this season. McKeithan went 6 2|3 innings, striking out 4 to run his strike out total to 72 and walking 4, to gain his seventh win of the cam paign. Leland used four pitchers in their battle to stop the Sails. Jimmy Medlin was the starter and loser. He was relieved by Ray Scott in the fourth, Roger Ganey in the fifth, and John Jones in the ninth. The Sails jumped off to a three-run lead in the first on Spencer’s homer in the Leland centerfield swamps, scoring Paul Cochran who had singled and Bobby Spencer who was on with a walk. Leland came right back with two runs in me bottom of the first as Jones began the fire works after two were out with a single into right field. Roger Ganey sent Jones to third with another single and stole second to set up a two-run play on Sam my Hilbuin’s long hit to center field. Leland took a momentary lead in the third when R. Ganey drew McKeithan’s second walk, stole second and went to third on an error through shortstop that let Duck Cook end up on second base. David Ganey singled to bring in both runners. 1 That’s right—whatever you need to help you improve your home— we have it! The Sails fourth in ning runs came on a double by Bobby Spencer, walks to J. Spen cer and Gene Russ, singles by McKeithan, Foxy Howard, John Carr Davis, Bobby Spencer, J. Spencer, and Jerry Wayne Spen cer, an error and a hit batsman. Leland also had a big inning in the seventh when R. Ganey led off with a triple and was singled home by Cook after Hil burn had popped out to the Sails’ second baseman. D.. Ganey drew a walk and both runners scored on a two base error that got through the shortstop and was kicked around awhile in centerfield. Med lin flew out to left for the second out. Williams drew a walk and went to third on a single by Scott. The later went to second when the outfielder's 'throw went to the wrong base. Russ relieved McKeithan on the mound and walked Jones to load the bases. R. Ganey, up for the second time in the inning, dribblec: a topper down the third base line. The Sails’ third baseman elected to make a fast throw to second in stead of taking the easy play at first, but the second baseman stumbled over the bag and drop ped the ball as two more Tigers roared across the plate. Hilburn ended the agony as fh.e grounded out, short to first. Two more Leland i runs in the eighth inning brought them to within one of the front-running Sails. Cook led off with a walk, went to second on an infield out, and came home on a single by Donald White. White stole second and came home on a single by Williams as the Sails’ first base man took the throw from the out field and chased White across the plate instead of throwing the ball to the catcher. In the ninth inning the Sails added an insurance run as they narrowly missed being caught on the short end of a triple play. McKeithan, the first man to face Jones on the mound, drew a walk and was sent down to second on a. balk when'Jones failed to hesi I tate on the delivery. Howard drew a second walk to put men on first and second. Cochran, at tempting a bunt, popped up the ball to the pitcher. Jones whirled to throw to second but overthrew the bag. McKeithan, who had got ten almost to third before he found out the attempted bunt had been caught on the fly, returned to second and tagged the base. Howard was already standing on second, also thinking the bunt had been trapped instead of caught. The two baserunners on second looked at each other a few sec onds and then McKeithan started for third and Howard for first. Howard was tagged out but Mc Keithan made it safely to the hot corner. Ben Blake singled into centerfield to score McKeithan and put the Sails ahead 15 to 13. In the bottom of the ninth Le land loaded the bases, with two out, on a single and two walks, but Russ settled down to retire Medlin on strikes and end the game. The Sails, with ten wins and two losses, enjoy a two game lead in the Cape Fear League. With only two games left to play they are assured of at least a tie for first if they win either of their remaining games. Sea gate, second with seven wins and three losses, have four games left on their schedule and must win them all to edge the Sails out of the championship. The Sails meet Seagate on the latters home diamond this Sunday afternoon in the most important game of the season for either team. It is the game that will probably decide the regular-sea son championship and place the winner in the number one slot for the post-season play-offs. This is his second year as regular and he is currently batting .340, with 16 safeties for 47 official trips to the plate, including 5 doubles and 3 triples. He is the third leading batter on the team. Paul rarely makes an error, but when he does it is usually a lulu that makes him consider hanging up his spikes for the rest of the season. Always after one of his rare errors, however, he comes up with a series of brilliant plays that causes him to consider trying out for the Yankees next season. Paul is a good all-round ball player and can always be counted on to help hold the team together with his solid knowledge of the game when the going gets a little rough. Paul is married to the former Betty McGlamery of Southport. They reside on West Bay Street Howard on the mound at Sea gate. In an interview after last Sunday’s game at Leland Man ager Bryant confided that while the Sails were lucky to win at Leland, he was glad that they had gotten rid of all the bone head plays they could think of and would probably be in good shape to turn back Seagate’s bid for a share of the regular season championship. PAUL COCHRAN and are expecting their first little shortstop the latter part of this year. Paul says his first bootees will have spikes on them and the cigars he gives out will be in the shape of a Louisville Slugger. In fact they are considering nam ing the youngster Louie and call ing him Slugger lor short (stop).
