Sails Are Assured Of At Least A Tie For League Championship During the past week the .Southport Sails were awarded a forfeit over Riegel for a game scheduled to be played in South port several weeks ago, for which Riegel failed to field a team. The forfeit assured the Sails of at least a tie for the regular season championship in the Cape Fear League. With a chance to wrap up undisputed possession of the title the Sails visited Seagate Sunday afternoon for their last regularly scheduled game of the season, only to drop the game to the 'Gators by a score of 4 to 2. Seagate has three games re maining on their schedule, and mu§t win all three in order to retain a share of the champion ship. This Sunday afternoon Sea gate is scheduled to play Leland in a double-header at Leland in a pair of games that are just as important to Leland as to Sea gate. Leland must win at least one in order to have a chance to gain a play-off berth in the post season play-offs. Lou Howard pitched for Sea gate Sunday afternoon and gain ed his seventh win without a loss. He is scheduled to pitch one of the games at Leland Sunday af ternoon but, as Ray Scott remark ed a few days ago, "He can’t STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! Buy anything in household and kitchen furniture. John Carr Davis, batting third, touched Howard for two singles in five trips to the plate. Bobby Spencer, the clean-up batter, finished the day with three for five; and Jerry Spencer came through with a pair of safeties for his five times at bat. Bobby McKeithan took the loss, his third, against eight wins, in a game that was well played but in which the Sails just didn’t get the breaks. McKeithan fanned one 'Gator to finish the season with 73 strikeouts. The League Championship Tournament is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 19, unless rain this week-end forces a one-week postponement. The team finishing in first place will play a home game against the third place fin isher. The team finishing in sec ond place will play a home game against the fourth place team. The two winners of these pre liminary games will then play a best two-out-of-three series for the championship. The champion ship series will be played on a home and home basis with the third game, if necessary, to be played on a neutral field. The Sails are assured of at least one home game in the tournament, no matter how Seagate makes out in their final three games. In a tune-up game with Leland Tuesday night at Taylor Field the Sails bested Leland to the tune of 15 to 11 in a game which saw' each manager shifting his entire team around in an effort to find a winning combination for the upcoming play-offs. McKeithan was the wunner of the exhibition game, fanning six and walking three in his four innings on the mound. Wayne Ludlum, the Sails starter, gave up 6 hits and 11 runs in his three-inning stint as the Sails infield committed five “Meet The Sails” John Carr Davis, 34, fishes for , a living and plays baseball for ) recreating, a most enviable way j of life. John has only one com- j plaint. He says that last week his batting average was higher than his fishing catch. Davis is a veteran of seven years with the Sails, latching on as a starter the same year that the Sails joined the Cape Fear League. In his seven year hitch, he has played every position on the team. This year he has been behind the bat on several occa sions, he plays regularly at third but has filled in at shortstop and second base and has played the outfield a couple of times. He is currently the Sails leading batter with an average of .395 for seven teen safeties in 43 official trips to the plate. Although no record has been kept, it is a safe bet to i assume that he has been fanned : less than any other member of the team this year. He has been a consistently good batter in his seven years, batting less than .300 only once. He is dependable Cape Fear League Southport . Seagate .. Ransom . Hampstead . Leland . Riegel ..
