Boiling Springs Bowlers Winners Boiling Spring Lakes took over first place in the Summer Bowl ing League by sweeping the se ries from Watson's Pharmacy by a score of 4-0. As a result of the victory, Boiling Spring Lakes now holds a three game margin over Watson’s, last week's leader. Leading the. victory were Joy Gregory with a three game se ries of 458, Dot Manis with a 417, Sylvia James with a 415 and Margaret Hickman with a 387. Boiling Spring Lakes play again tonight (Wednesday) at the Bowling Center in Wilmington Southport Wins Regular Season Championship Race Preston Bryant, in his first I year as manager of the Southport | Sails, has pulled* a typical Casey I Stengel stunt in leading the Sails to their first regular season j championship since Southport en ! tered the Cape Fear League seven years ago. In the 14-game schedule the Sails dropped two games to Sea gate and one to Ransom. As far as Seagate was concerned the Sails just simply got heat in two well played baseball games, once at home and once on the Seagate diamond. The Ransom loss was a 6 to 4 affair played at Ransom which the Sails lost when they gave up four unearned runs after two men were out in the third inning. In winning their eleven games the Sails beat Ransom once at Taylor Field in Southport and took home and home games from Hampstead. Leland, Shallotte, Og den and Riegel. One of the Riegel wins was on a forfiet when they failed to field a team for the scheduled game. Only orte regularly scheduled game remains to be played in the Cape Fear League. Seagate and Ransom will play off a game that ended earlier this year in a two to two tie. Should Seagate win this game Sunday afternoon, Ran som and Leland will then be tied for fourth place with identical 8 and 6 records. In that case an additional playoff will become necessary to decide the number four team in the championship Gape Fear League W L (ili Southport . 11 3 Seagate ....... 9 4 iy2 Hamstead .. 9 5 2 Ransom . 8 5 21 i Leland . 8 6 3 Riegel . 6 8 5 Shallotte . 2 12 9 Ogden 2 12 9 YOU SOUND LIKE A TV COMMERCIAL 1 V/ S JUST THAT SO PLEASED WITH THE PRESCRIPTION DEPARTMENT AT WATSON'S . On the otherhand, a Seagate loss would result in a three-way tie for second place between Sea gate, Ransom and Hampstead with 9 wins and 5 losses each, inquiring a three way playoff to determine the pairings for the tournament between the top four teams in the regular season com petition. The first game of the cham pionship play-off is scheduled to begin on Sunday afternoon, Sep tember 1st at 3 p. m. between Southpori and the third place fin isher at Taylor Field. In pre game ceremonies Manager Bry ant will be awarded the trophy for the regular season champion ship. The second and fourth place teams will play a game at the same time on the home field of the second place finisher. The tw’o winners will play a three game series on a home and home basis, with the third game, if necessary, to be played on a field mutually agreed upon by both teams. Ii all post-season games the Cape Fear League will furnish the plate umpire and each of the two teams playing will furnish one base umpire. Final details were decided upon during a meet ing of league officials and team managers at the Sports Center in Wilmington Tuesday night. During the meeting all of the of ficials a id managers agreed that if a trophy were to be given for sportsmanship it would be won easily by the Southport Sails. HOLIDAY DRIVE-IN SHALLOTTE, N. C.
