(Photo by Spencer) Shallotte Needs Football Opener By JIGGS POWERS SHALLOTTE — Shallotte’s Pi rates are seeking a football game tor the opening date on their 1968 schedule, September 6. Coach Gene Winfree said, in announcing the games he has listed for his Bucaneers of 1968 to play, that he has thought he had a game for that September 6th date on several occasions, but finds each time that he still has it open. He desires a game'to be played at the Shallotte home field, but would be interested in contacts from any coach that happens to have the same date open on their schedule. Plans could be made from there, he said. Winfree may be- reached at Shallotte, N.C., P.O. Box #1, (Zip 28459), or by telephone at Shallotte, 754-4962. To date, the Pirates have two non-conference ga mes to go along with the seven slated against other Waccamaw Athletic Asso ciation opponents. The non-league foes are two of the same ones the Brunswick County outfit faced during its 1967 schedule. They are Rose bo ro-Salemburg, which club will play here on September 20, and Dixon, which outfit winfree and Company will visit for their clos ing game on November 8. Missing is Massey Hill, the non-league outfit jvith which the 1967 Pirates opened their schedule. It is this open date that Coach Winfree desires to fill for the coming slate. Shallotte’s first three games are at home, against Bladen boro, Roseboro-Salemburg and Hallsboro. It then goes on the road for four consecutive week ends, traveling to Tabor City, Fairmont, West Columbus and Powell Wins At Leland But Sam Wasn’t Running By JIGGS POWERS LELAND — Another South Carolinian managed to come home in first-place and break Florence’s Sam Ard’s winning ways at the Leland Raceway, Saturday night, but he had fate to help him turn the trick. Because when Charlie Powell of Charleston, S. C. won first place in the feature Late Model event at the high-banked speed Elizabethtown before returning home to face whiteville. Here is the 1968 Shallotte grid card, as it now stands: SEPTEMBER 6 — open; 13— Bladenboro, here; 20—Rose boro-Salemburg, here; 27— Hallsboro, here. OCTOBER 4 — at Tabor City; 11—at Fairmont; 18 — at west Columbus; 25 — at Elizabeth town. NOVEMBER 1 — Whiteville, here; 8 — at Dixon. Shallotte Needs Replacements (This is the fifth in a series of articles pertaining to the ap proaching 1968 football season within the Waccamaw Athletic Association. This story con cerns the possibilities of the Shallotte Pirates. — JP). By JIGGS POWERS (Waccamaw AA Publicist) SHALLOTTE — Losses that need to be replaced. . .Some of the possible replacements un tested and untried in the "Bap tism of Fire” within varsity action. . . These items fit neatly on the tab opposite the Shallotte Pirates of the 1968 WAA grid fortunes and the whyfores and wherecomes that are to come with that fast approaching season. For Coach Gene winfree, in his 11th season at the helm of Pirate gridiron action at Shal lotte High School, finds himself looking back at a 1967 roster that will have a number of holes left in it by graduation. And, so far as he can see now, the only available "filling’' he has for those holes are boys who’ll come up from the 1967 junior varsity, Baby Pirates. "Some of the rising gridders looked pretty good in that phase of foot way, Ard wasn’t in the running. The truth is, and was, that Sam—who had won 10 races at Leland previously this season had to miss the event here be • cause of car trouble. Running at Cooper River, S. C. on Friday night, Sam had blown an engine in his speedy ’bile and couldn’t make it here, Saturday. How ever, he watched the race here as Powell came in first in the big 50 lap feature. Powell took the lead and stayed out front to win as Glen Simp kins of Raleigh, an early leader, f&ded from his lead at the start. Hoss Ellington from nearby Wil mington, finished second, and Richard Brickhouse of Rocky Point finished iri third-place. In the modified division, Walt Zawaski of Castle Hayne was the winner, with Billy Todd of Wilmington winding up in sec ond, Herman Jordan of White ville coming in third. And, in the Rookie division, Buster Farmer of Delco was the winner, with Tinker Ramsey of Leland in second and Wayne Nye of Whiteville in third spot. The Leland Raceway will again present its regular racing pro gram on Saturday night, with Ard expected to be back. The race way management has offered a $100 bonus to any driver who will defeat the Florence pilot. ball,” says the coach of Pirate land, “but up here in the varsity ranks, you have to prove your self again. It’s much, much tougher and the boys know that. I’m sure a lot of them are look ing forward to that ‘proving time’ and will not be lacking when the roll is called for varsity action. "But,” he reminded, "right now we’re faced with this situa tion: These boys have to prove themselves, regardless. I’m hoping they can do it. If so, we’ll have a fairly good season, I guess.” Nine boys were lost from the 1967 Shallotte eleven which wound up in a three-way tie for fourth-place in the waccamaw Athletic Association standings last fall, along with West Colum bus and Elizabethtown. Each had 3-4 records within the loop. , Shallotte finished 6-4 over all, winning its first four games, against Massey Hill (14-0), Bla denboro (24-6), Roseboro-Sal emburg (21-6), and Hallsboro (7-0), losing its next two to Tabor City (26-0) and Fairmont (51-0), winning over West Co lumbus (21-7), losing to Elizabethtown (20-7) andwhite ville (35-0), then winding up with a non-conference win over Dixon (31-7). The nine losses included Ends Danny Leonard and Rusty Russ, Tackle Clinton Milligan, Guards Arrell Holden and Wayne Benton, and Center Thurston Gore, all in the front line. And, the others, all in the back field, who are missing include Quarterback Steve Holden, Half back Skipper Brummett and Byron Holden, who played both in the backfield and line during the season. Among this group, Halfback Skipper Brummett was a pick for Shallotte’s only spot on the 1968 Coaches’ All-Waccamaw Ath letic Association Football Team. Winfree has a total of 10 letter men expected to be on hand for opening workouts next month. These include: In the forward wall, Ends Freddie Hewett, a 155-pound senior and Don Stanley, a 145 pound junior; Tackles Jerry High, a 245-pound senior and Trippe Sloane, 170-pound jun ior; Guard Ronnie Cumbee, a 140-pound senior. No center returns, according to the statistics compiled. In the backfield, there’ll be Don Hughes, who played some at halfback last year while under studying Steve Holden at Quarter back. He’s a 118-pound senior; also Halfbacks Charles Reynolds, 140-pound junior, Joe Cox, 135 pound junior, and Bill Harris, 150-pound junior; also Fullback Ray Jones, 200-pound senior, who’ll be back for his fourth season. A number of other boys are also expected, most of whom were members of last year’s Baby Pirate jayvees, along with sev eral newcomers, some even upper classmen, who have never played football. Others anticipated Include Ends Larry Richards, 130-pound sophomore, Tony Benton, 180 pound sophomore, and Senior James Phelps, 150-pounder; Tackles Richard Thorson, 165 pound sophomore, Dwight Reeves, 200-pound senior, and James Gray, 165-pound junior; Guards Randy Hewett, 155-pound junior, Robert Leggett, 135 pound junior, and Mack Hewett, 130-pound sophomore; and Cen ters Kenny Bellamy, 145-pound junior and Jerry Martin, 160 pound senior. Shallotte, like others In the Waccamaw Athletic Association, will begin pre-season condition ing workouts on August 8; will start regular practice ses sions on August 15, a week later. Thus far, the Pirates are due to open their schedule on Sept. 13, with Bladenboro here in an official WAA battle. However, Coach Winfree was still seeking an earlier game for the Sept. 6 date when last contacted. Men In Service Stanley E.
