Thell B. Overman, president of the conference, said today that two games will be played nightly in the event, beginning at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Admission will be a dollar for adults, fifty cents for students. Admission will be a dollar for everyone on the night of the Saturday, March 7 finals. All six Southeastern entries will participate in the tourney. Brunswick County’s two entries, Bolivia’s Lady Bears and the Lady Tigers of Leland, will take part in the opening round on March 2. Chancellor John T. Caldwell announced that the four attained academic averages of “B” or better and were placed on the Dean’s List for the fall semester. He praised the Brunswick students, and noted that a record number of 2,206 students, or 21 percent of the undergraduate enrollment, earned the high honor. Two of the Brunswick students are enrolled in the fastest-growing school on the campus, the School of Liberal Arts. Emerson U. Fullwood, an economics major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. frank S. Fullwood, Supply. Mary L. Ruark is studying history, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Ruark, Southport. She is also part of the largest number of coeds to study at NCSU. Total enrollment of women this fall was 2,097, as compared to 1,697 a year ago. The other Brunswick students are enrolled in engineering and math education. Michael G. Hyet Holden SHALLOTTE-Hyet Holden, 44, of Longwood, died Wednesday in New Hanover Memorial Hospital, Wilmington. Shallotte wound up 7-7 for 5th-place in the WAA tourney ratings and a 13-7 overall mark, the best the Pirates have compiled in a number of yeais. Coach Tommy Clark’s Elizabethtown Baby Jackets copped the jayvee game, beating the Baby Pirates, 71-42, with Graham Inscoe hitting 24 points for the victors; Bill Bellamy getting 12, Delwood Johnson 11 and Rapheal Johnson 10 for Shallotte. ETown led at halftime, 36-20. Elizabethtown wanted that varsity win, too, and showed it by jumping ahead in the first quarter, 25-16, and held on at 35-33 at halftime despite a good rally by Shallotte. And, in the jayvee opener of the Lower Cape Fear Conference season-closer, Leland racked up a 66-49 triumph, after leading at the intermission, 35-25. Leland Wins D-2 Position By JIGGS POWERS FAISON —Coach Tom Langdon’s Leland Tigers gained a berth in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association District II, Class A Tournament beginning at North Duplin gym the first week in March, by defeating Clements, 62-55, in a sudden-death playoff here, Saturday night. It was “sudden” to Leiand, too, for the Tigers didn’t know about it until late in the week—that they’d have to meet the Clements club to get to become Brunswick County’s second representative in the District II tourney. Waccamaw has already clinched the No. 1 Brunswick spot by posting a 12-0 Lower Cape Fear Conference record for its third straight regular season crown. Leland will now meet White Oak in the Tuesday night, March 3, round of the District II “A” event here, in the 7 p.m. game. The Tigers are playing in the Lower Cape Fear Conference Tournament at Lake Waccamaw and Wilmington, this week.
