v.v.v.v.v.v.v.v. Hit or Miss? (OaoUmud Warn Fk|» On) 44.9 percent indicated they owned less than five acres. What kind of people was Sencland Community Action going to help? School dropouts who could not get good employment and were unaware of, or unconcerned with, the help they could get. The study revealed that two-thirds of the families included persons in the 19-45 age group who left school before graduation. Compounding this undesirable situation, only 26 percent of the population involved in the survey was in the 19-45 age group considered most desirable for employment. MOVING AWAY Staff members conducting the survey concluded there was an out-migration by this age group because of the unavailibility of employment that would provide a liveable income. The rate of dropouts indicated the necessity of additional training to upgrade the potential of poor people for better jobs. Only 5.5 percent of the respondents reported that self-employment was their source of income, while 29.4 percent listed government assistance. Fanning accounted for 15.9 percent, according to the survey. The survey determined that “a fair percentage” of the families had insurance to cover medical bills, although too many of them had only partial (13 percent) coverage or no (42 percent) coverage at all. Medical service was available within the county for 78 percent of the families, but more than half replied that they had to travel more than ten miles for the service. This indicated a need for improved medical and health services closer to home, the report stated. A high percentage of families pointed out the need for more doctors, multi-purpose medical centers and hospitals, further indicating the lack of much-needed medical services. M VS TUJT TUlLGlo More than two-thirds of the houses were owned by the residents, but less than half had running water, only 38.9 percent had indoor toilets, only 31.9 percent had telephones and 5.5 percent had no electricity. On the plus side, more than three-fourths of the respondents had televisions and radios. Almost two-thirds of these families received no newspaper and of those who did, less than one percent received a daily paper. More than one-third of the families had no books in their homes and fewer than one in four had magazines. An average of 15 percent had homes in good condition while the average of homes in poor condition was 38 percent, pointing out the need for an improved housing program. The staff of Sencland Community Action, Inc., Situation in '66; has her plight improved? "a* concluded that the survey showed “an impoverished people who are dissatisfied with their plight; who want to and are willing to help improve their condition; who need and must have financial assistance, basic educational, technical, and vocational training if they are to ever begin to realize a better way of life.” It was on this basis that Sencland Community Action, Inc., applied for funds with which to alleviate poverty. Easter Seal Fund-Raising Drive Begins The Southeastern Chapter, Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of North Carolina Inc., will begin its fund raising drive in March. This society in Brunswick county has in the past helped many people, children and adults, purchase braces, crutches, orthopedic shoes, and many other appliances that were needed. The society purchases only for those who cannot afford to buy for themselves, and there is no other program available to them. Businesses in Brunswick County will be contacted for donations. Easter Seals will be mailed to individuals. “Won’t you plan a Happy Easter for yourself by making a generous donation to the Easter Seal Society to help someone less fortunate than yourself,” urged Mrs. A. P. Howry, Brunswick county chairman, this week. French Students On Trip French students from Brunswick County-Southport High School attended a play in Greensboro last week end. Veterans Check Annual Income Questionnaire Veterans and widows who have been awarded pension by the Veterans Administration for nonservice-connected disabilities and do not receive their check due February 1 should check to see if their annual income questionnaire has been returned to the Veterans Administration, according to the W. F. Lauer, County Veterans Service Officer. The County Veterans Service Officer said all veterans and widows receiving pension for nonservice-connected disabilities are required by the Veterans Administration to report their income annually. The pensions are paid to war veterans with limited income who are totally disabled for reasons not related to military service and to their widows and to certain other dependents of veterans who meet income limitations. Hie local office said that a report of income is not required of those veterans and widows receiving compensation or dependency and indemnity compensation for service-connected disabilities or death.
