Bolivia Skunks Leland9 6 To 0 : By JIGGS POWERS LELAND — Bolivia’s Bears, coached by Joe Best, took a major step toward the 1971 Brunswick County Conference baseball championship here, Wed nesday night, when it handed Leland’s Tigers a 6-0 shutout defeat. Bolivia, now 7-3 overall, is . 2-0 within die Brunswick County loop. Coach Tom Langdon’s Tigers from Leland are the defending conference champions, having won the tide die past two seasons. Bolivia’s George Irving kept the defending champs well in hand throughout the ballgame, allowing not a single Tiger to reach third base. Irving, a righthander, gave up only 4 hits, whiffed 11 batsmen and walked but 1. Shaun Spencer and Billy Milligan worked on the mound for the Langdon team, with Spencer being charged with the beating. He gave up 5 runs, 7 hits, fanned 3 and walked 1. Milligan, who relieved Spencer in die 4th inning when Best’s charges tallied four times to clinch the battle, gave up one hit, one run, struck out none and walked four. -Don Watkins, the veteran Bruin catcher, hit 3 for 4 to lead his team at the plate, with one of his knocks being a run-scoring triple. Aaron Wescott added 2 for 2 for the Bolivians. For Leland, Donnie Sellers and Elmore Sullivan were each 1 for 2. In that Bolivia 4th, lst Baseman James Mintz got things going by dropping a swinging bunt in front of the plate and Catcher Bobby Child of the Tigs threw into rightfield attempting to get him at first-base. Aaron Wescott singled and David Watkins walked to load the bases. Milligan came in to pitch for Leland and im mediately walked Mike Simmons to force in Mintz with a run. He walked Charles West, scoring Wescott with another marker. Don Watkins singled in David Watkins and Sim mons before a bit of slipshod base-running by the Bears I— ended the frame. Bolivia has a non-loop game with Penderlea, at Penderlea, Thursday at 4 pjn., hosts Leland at Bolivia, Friday in a 7:30 game that counts in the loop standings. Leland has a home-game with Waccamaw in conference play, Tuesday at 7:30 pjm. Bruins Defeat Tigers Again By JIGGS POWERS BOLIVIA — Randy Rabon, 155-pound junior outfielder, whaled out a grandslam homer in the first inning here for his Bolivia Bears, Friday night, and Coach Joe Best’s club went on to an 8-5 Brunswick County Con ference baseball triumph over the Leland Tigers. It was the second straight win for Coach Best’s charges against last year’s B-CC defending champs from Leland. Bolivia is now 3-0 at the top of the county league and is 8-3 overall. Leland, coached by Tom Langdon, stands 2-2 in the circuit and is 3-8 overall. Bolivia was 3-0 in the B-CC, 8-3 overall following the game here, Friday night. Leland, 2 2 in the conference, was 3-8 altogether after the contest. Randy Rabon’s homer was the big lick in the contest. With two out in the first in ning, Don Watkins walked, Mike Simmons was safe when Shortstop Roger Corbett of the Tigers erred Simmons’ grounder and then George Irving had an infield hit to load the bases. Randy Rabon’s bases-loaded four master followed. His “big one’’ came on a 3-2 count. Another Rabon, Wayne, was the winning pitcher for Bolivia. George Irving started for the Bruins, gave up 7 hits, fanned 3, walked 3 and allowed 3 runs in going Hardy Breaks Pirate Track Mark In 100 By JIGGS POWERS SHALLOTTE—With Amos Hardy’s new school record In the 100-yard dash sparking the action, Coach Jim Marshall’s Shallotte Pirates romped over West Columbus in a 94-33 track decision here, last Wednesday. Hardy ran the 100 in the record time of 9.9. The time is well under the official Waccaifiaw Athletic Association mark of 10.2, set hy Hallsboro’s George Webb in the 1965 Official WAA Track and Field Meet. Only times and distances recorded in the official meet of the conference, annually, count in the WAA record book. Hardy will have a chance at that record this week during the Official WAA Track and Field Meet, being held at Boys’ Home track at Lake Waccamaw. naray aiso won me long jump and tied with Team mate Elton Stanley in the 220 dash to be big man in the dual meet. JEFFREYS, Jr. Brunswick County Tax Supervisor Shallotte’s Pirates New WAA Track Champs By JIGGS POWERS (Waccamaw AA Publicist) LAKE WACCAMAW — Coach Jimmy Marshall’s Shallotte Pirates stayed well in the running most of the way, then swept the first two places on the fleet heels of Amos Hardy and Elton Stanley in the 220-dash and went on to cop their first Waccamaw Athletic Association Track and Field championship in some five years by the narrow margin of two points. WAS POSTPONED The decision came in the 1971 Official WAA Track and Field Meet held on the Boys’ Home track here, Thursday, after the meet had been rained out. the day before. Shallotte scored 62 points, Elizabethtown’s Cougars and Hallsboro’s host Tigers tied for second-place in the meet with 60 points each, Fair mont’s Golden Tornadoes were next with 32 points, Tabor City’s Red Devils had 15 points, West Columbus Vikings had 10. The win, coupled with West Columbus’ upset win of 4-3 over Whiteville, Friday night, enabled Hallsboro to move back into a second-place tie with Whiteville in the ever changing WAA diamond chase. Fairmont was left on top, Friday night, with an 8-2 record; Whiteville and Hafisboro were 9-3. Randy Pierce pitched the win for Hallsboro, giving up 1 hit, fanning 4, walking 3 in going the first five innings. Coach Unwood Hedgepeth then used three pitchers in the 8th inning and used one more for mound duty In the finale. Wayne Long was the starter and loser for SHS, Doug Hubbard relieved him in the 6th. Iarry Williamson hit 2 for 2, Danny Kissam 2 for 4 for Hallsboro. Bobby White had Shallotte’s only single in the 3rd inning. Shallotte faces Fairmont here, Monday; goes to Elizabethtown, Tuesday night and hosts Whiteville here, Friday in its season closer. That gave The Pirates the lead they never lost. WIN BY TWO Came the final event, the mile relay and Shallotte needed at least a second place to finish ahead. And, the Bucs did Just that, with the team of Myles Hardy, Thomas Inman, David Carmichael and William Burney being runner-up with a run of 3:41.0.
