(jets scholarship to state Kenneth Hewett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Edward Hewett, of Supply has been named winner of a $500 educational scholarship from the North Carolina 4-H Development Fund. Hewett, a senior at Tornado Nips Bucs, 10 To 9 By JIGGS POWERS SHALLOTTE — Coach Gene Winfree’s hard-luck Shallotte Pirates saw a glimmer of hope here in the final inning, Monday af ternoon, but they had already spotted Fairmont’s Golden Tornadoes too much lead with their miscues and the Robeson Countians managed to edge the local Bucs, 10-9, in a Waccamaw AA contest. Shallotte, which had 7 errors against it here, Monday, was losing its 7th straight game and its record was 1-11 in the WAA; 2-12 overall after the game here. Coach Wayne Bullard’s Fairmont crew was 10-2 in loop action at its top-spot, had an overall mark of 16-2 for the season at the time. Shallotte is due to play Whiteville’s Wolfpack here, Friday at 4 p.m. to end its 1971 schedule. Fairmont goes to Hallsboro on Saturday night at 7:30 to end its card, also. me rirates committed 7 errors in Monday’s game, and by virtue of their miscues, Fairmont held a 5-3 lead when the 7th, and final, inning began. Then, the local defense became solvent again and Fairmont piled up 5 runs to make its lead, 10-3. Shallotte made a strong effort to overcome its deficit but, though it compiled 6 runs in its last chance, it was not enough and victory was missing. Mike Winfree hit 2 for 4, Elton Stanley 2 for 5, Tommy Inman collected a 2-run homer in the 6th inning for the Pirates. For the Tor nadoes, Winning Pitcher Eldon McDaniel hit a double and triple in his 3-for-5 average; Frank Floyd added 2 for 4. BUILDorBUY GRANDFATHER CLOCKS r AT FACTORY PRICES! SAVE $200. Norfleet L. Sugg, Rocky Mount, president of the fund, says the scholarships are awarded to outstanding 4-H members for college study during the 1971-72 academic year. The 4-H Development Fund, with headquarters at North Carolina State University at Raleigh, was organized in 1958 by friends and alumni of 4-H to help support certain phases of dub work. Sugg explained that this is the 10th year that scholar ships have been awarded. Recipients, he reported, are selected on the basis of their high school record, evidence of college aptitude and 4-H work. The scholarship was provided by the Waccamaw Bank and Truck Company through the North Carolina 4 H Development Fund. The banking firm has supported the 4-H dub program in Brunswick County and North Carolina for a number of # / // M years. Hewett has compiled an outstanding record ot ac complishments during nine years of 4-H work. He has been named state winner in public speaking and district winner in his health and Chilean nitrate projects. He has completed 48 projects, been a member of the County 4-H Livestock Judging Team for seven years, and has given numerous demon strations. He was declared Top-teen Boy for Youthpower in North Carolina in 1969. For the past three years he has served as president of the Brunswick County 4-H Council. Hewett has been active in school and community affairs. He is vice-president of Shallotte High School Student Government Association, a member of the National Honor Society, student newspaper staff, and Science Club. He recently served as publicity chairman for the County Heart Fund and is a member of the Shallotte Order of Demolay. Hewett has been accepted at North Carolina State University and plans to major in food science. vinyl floors are as easy on your pocketbook as they are on your kitchen And you save the cost of installa tion, too.
