The Way It Was Several years ago there was a going boatworks on the waterfront between Howe St. and Davis St. and it turned out a fleet of big, powerful shrimp trawlers that changed the concept of this type of work boat in this area. Lewis J. Hardee was the proprietor and Robert Spaulding, a Negro from Florida, was the boat builder. When the last of the fleet was completed the big, unsightly shed which had housed the operation for several months was-, torn down. That portion of the waterfront along Bay St. now is completely uncluttered. The visit here this week of the Coast Guard Academy training vessel the Eagle has public attention focused on the Southport waterfront. Visiting aboard this sailing ship is a unique experience for even those people who have some knowledge of conventional boats. They simply are not making ships like this any more. Several other ships got in on the act Tuesday afternoon Leopard Spots By LESLIE ZACHARY The BCSH Kindergarten commencement exercises will be held May 28. Hie program will be divided into two parts. The first will be a skit from Sesame Street, followed by the presentation of the Kindergarten diplomas to the 33 students. The program will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the BCSH gymtorium. Everyone is invited to come and watch the youngest of the BCSH family graduate into their first year of elementary school. The 1971 annual, the “Leopard”, arrived Monday of last week. They were presented to the BCSH students during a 45 minute presentation program by the BCSH seniors Tuesday. The BCSH exams will begin Friday of this week and will continue through Tuesday of next week. Of course, everyone is really looking forward to this last segment of the 1970-71 school year. Hie “Leopard Spots” readers will be interested to learn that next year the column will be written each week by Miss Faye Small. Faye will be a senior at BCSH next year. She is 17-years old and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.K. Small of Long Beach. Faye is very interested in writing and is considering Jour nalism as a future. She has already made a good start for herself. In her sophomore year she won a BCSH library essay contest that was sponsored by Mrs. Stanley, the school librarian. The essay was on “Book Power”. Faye also entered the national Pepsi-Cola essay contest last year. The subject was “Why You’ve Got A Lot To Live.” She was chosen as one of the 14 finalist in the contest and was presented an Award of Excellence. This year, Faye wrote a play for a Christmas program that was presented at the Oak Island Baptist Church. The play was entitled “Where is Christ Today?” It was sent off to a church magazine company to be published. Since then, Faye has received letters from different church magazines expressing a desire to publish the play for her. I feel sure that Fyae will prove to be a fine school reporter and I hope all of the community will show her as much interest and enthusiasm as I have been shown the past three years. I as they passed through the Southport harbor, giving visitors the impression of busy shipping activity. Prior to letting down die gangplank for visitors to come aboard, one of the cadets suffered a moment of embarrassment when he lost his hat overboard. There was no chance for recovery, and he watched it float away on thfe incoming tide. The first sign of the Eagle’s crew was on Sunday af ternoon when a motor launch showed up at the City Pier with a work crew, who proceeded to make soundings to determine the depth of water at the mooring. It was not until later that it was discovered that these men actually were from the Coast Guard training ship, which at the time was an-: chared off the sea buoy. . The visit of the Eagle to Southport held special significance for Mr. and Mrs. John Sprouse of Greensboro. They had been in Wilmington for a telephone Pioneers meeting when they learned that the big sailing ship was due in Southport Tuesday. They have a son who is a cadet at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and they knew he was on this cruise. They arrived here Monday to wait until the ship docked. For them it was a case of so-near-but-yet-so-far as they rode over to Fort Caswell Sunday afternoon to see the Eagle riding at anchor at the . entrance of the Cape Fear River channel. Two things about the Eagle made a particularly strong impression on us. The first is that most of the men sleep in hammocks. The second is that there are very few power gadgets aboard. This in* eludes the steering mechanism, and it sometimes is necessary to have six men at the helm. Because this is true there are three wheels, and each had a platform on both side. The tall masts, towering 150.3-feet, had waterfront spectators looking up at the men manning the rigging. Another focal point of interest is the bronzed eagle which forms the figure head. Spectators who expected to see the Eagle come into the river under full sail were doomed to disappointment as she was nudged into her berth by a tug. The docking pilot was Capt. Roy Daniels.
