Why I’m Against Progress By LEWIS HARDEE, JR. Progress has become an ugly word to me because it has come to mean the surrender of our unique personality to the com monplace. Because of it we are poorer spiritually and economically. , I have expressed regret at the gradual loss of our oaks, because in many ways they, above all else, symbolize our town. Withoutsyfnbols a town is like a man without a face. Southport without oaks would be like Washington without monuments, like Cypress Gardens with no cypress trees. Who could remember the name of Carlesbad ^without its caverns? (What Reason would there be for Remembering it?) ; So, beyond the esthetic value, it makes good business eense. All who come to South-' port identify us with our oaks, and that, to my way of thinking is as economically advantageous as any patented trademark. While perhaps our chief symbol, the oak is not our only one. We are famous for our wide streets and paths that lead to the river bluff, and for our Whittier’s bench and our grove pump. How lucky we are that these have been preserved. However, I am less optimistic about other features. Take our marshes. We know that without them die sea will have no fishes, and for. that reason alone they must be safeguarded.. But beyond this they possess a beauty I have not discovered elSewhere, «TMa\ity equal to that of the mountains or the sea itself. I have walked out on the docks of the Yacht Basin and looked across the marshland toward Oak Island: Go for yourself and see it when it shines yellow green in new spring color, -1 EMPLOYMENT I OPPORTUNITY : Title: Chief Financial Officer i Location: Whiteville, North Carolina Salary Range: : $5,400 ■ $7,200 per year RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsible to the Executive Director for all agency financial operations including receipt, withdrawal and disbursement of funds; efficient maintenance of accounting records and preparation of financial reports. Go there in winter, when it is brown and desolate and the wind comes singing over it, melancholy and sad. You will surely wish that never a stalk of it be removed. Yet, everywhere I look it is being polluted, cut up and filled in. Southport is a town noted for its handsome, imposing coastal architecture. I have before me a list of dozens more.) Yet, today the town entrance is becoming a kind of electric city, grown up with neon signs and slap-dash non descript buildings. This kind of growth has nothing to do with the good character of Southport, but with the poorest of other places. For the wide avenues of Southport that lead so gracefully to open views of the river, and for our parks and recreational area, we have the considerate Governor Smith to thank. Today I note the growth of random housing develop ments on the town skirts, with little such planning or con sideration for the future, which makes one ask, “Where are the Benjamin Smiths of today?” The solution, it seems to me, lies notin the staying of a single axe, nor in the denial of any one building permit. What we need is what we have had in the past: growth with planning, and growth according to the principles of our own heritage and character. What we need, rather than more of some other place, is more of what we already are.
