Tabor City’s Devils Upset Scorpions ForEWC Title Data: EVERLENE DA VIS NORTH BRUNSWICK GYM, Leland — Coach John C. Williams’ Tabor City Red Devils knocked off the North Brunswick Scorpions, 75-70, in the finals of the First East Waccamaw 2-A Conference Basketball Tournament, Saturday night. The South Brunswick Baby Cougars also qiset Halls boro’s Baby Tigers in the finals of their division, 67-56. The results of the finals here saw the No. 2 teams in the tourney see dings, TC-s varsity and SB’s jayvees, knock off the first - place regular season champions in their respective brackets. Both varsity finalists will go into the District IV, 2-A Tournament at West Columbus’ gym, Tuesday; North Brunswick as the No. 1 - seeded EWC team; Tabor City as the EWC’s No. 2 team, due to their final regular season league standings. Both now have 16-6 overall records. All - EWC, All - Columbus Charles Mobley and All - EWC Allen Wright paced the Devils to Victory, along with Robert McNeil, Mobley and Wright hit respective point - totals of 27 and 17 points and Wright pulled down plenty of rebounds for the champs, while McNeil had 19 big Devil ‘■points. Audwin Pellom, NB’s All- EWC star, bucketed 27 points and Harold Willis had 10. Coach , Williams’ Devs took die lead in the first quarter and led most of the way, holding margins of 19-14, 35-34,57-50. Coach Frank Bua’s Scorpions managed to catch up with the Devils — defending State ’i-A runner - up — but never gained an advantage over them. COUGARS ADVANCE Coach Joe Best’s South Brunswick Cougars ad vanced to the semi - finals with a 74-56 decision over Coach Linwood Hedgepeth’s Hallsboro Tigers in the tourney’s first varsity scrap, Wednesday. The Cougs had a scrap on their hands, however, after taking a minute, 16-15 quarter lead. They suddenly found it wasn’t easy as Hedgepeth’s scrapping Tigs bounced back to gain the upper hand by halftime, 34-31. Then, a 12 point third quarter for Hallsboro while SB was scoring 22 put the Best - coached club in position to take a 53-46 margin. Isaac uaiioway nil zb points, Anthony McMillian added 17 and Van Galloway had a dozen more for the Cougars; while Charles Williams hit 25 big ones for Hallsboro and Jerome George came up with 12. BABY SCORPS, 58-55 North Brunswick’s Baby Scorpions, led by Walter Graham’s 21 points, followed by Carson Aycock’s 11, ousted Acme-Delco’s Baby Trojans, 58-55, in the actual tourney opener after having a 27-24 halftime margin. Dwight Dubar and Larry Webb each had 16 points and Isiay Pyatt had 12 for thelosers. Acme - Delco had beaten the Baby Scorps three times in regular season — 58 35, 65-47 and 78-60. Coach Gary Taylor’s Trojans from WB, now 23-0, put five men in double - figures and ran away from the East Central Con ference’s 4th - place team, Hobbton, in the first quarter, 26-4 and stood them off at die half, 39-26 and led after three, 63-32. Jimmy Bromell paced the TRC champs, hitting 22 points, his brother Lacca had 13, Woodrow Stevenson hit 12, Doug Thomas 11 and Harold Johnson 10. Tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p.m., the opening round will continue with Tabor City meeting Orrum and, at 8:30 p.m., St. Pauls plays Acme - Delco. However, Buck hit a 15 - footer from the left - side at 5:40 and Anthony McMillian had one at 5:04 for a 44 tie.
