T .eland News By Margaret Bordeaux CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Bennette Eddlns who announce the birth of a son, Isaac Bennette, March 31, Mrs. Eddlns is the Former Shyrell Ann Town send. Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson is still a patient In the New Hanover Memorial Hospital. She hopes to be home before long. Men In Service Hubert M. Cole, Jr., 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert M. Cole ol Southport, enlisted during February in tht National Guard. He is currently in basic training at Fori Leonard Wood, Mo. Army Sergeant James W. Norton, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Norton of Rt. 2 Supply, received the Bronze German Marksmanship Badge in Germany. The German Shooting award is given in three degrees of excellence — bronze, silver and gold. Only one award can be won yearly by an individual. The com petition consists of firing a rifle at ranges of 100, 200 and 250 meters and an antitank weapon at 100 and 150 meters. The sergeant is a com munications chief in Com pany B of the 3D Infantry Divison’s 10th Engineer Battalion in Bad Kissingen. His wife, Lavonda, is with him in Germany. Private James A. Sim mons, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alpho Simmons of Rt. 4 Whiteville, received a Parachutist Badge upon completion of the three-week Airborne Course at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Ft. Benning, Ga. During the first week of training, he underwent a rigorous physical program and received instruction in the theory of parachuting. The second week tested his ability through jumps from the 34-foot and 250-foot towers. The final week he was required to perform five static line parachute jumps. Pvt. THUR Mrs. Bessie Sullivan and Mrs. Sally Long would like to thank everyone who bought an Easter Lily this past weekend to help the Easter Society with Crippled Children. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Roy and Mr. and Mrs. Keith Hewett enjoyed the holidays in Alabama visiting with Mrs. Bill Roy Sr. In case you are wondering what was going on at the Community Library Monday it was a work day for all in terested people. If you have some free time and would like to help, please contact Mr. John Long. Mr. and Mrs. James Simmons spend the Easter Holidays in Myrtle Beach and visiting with Mrs. Simmons’ r relatives. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. William (Ernie) Leggett Jr. who was married on April 1 13 at Jessup Baptist Church in Jessup, Maryland. Ernie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Leggett Sr. The Leggetts enjoyed the holidays in Maryland with their son at the wedding. Hope everybody had a nice Easter and the Easter Bunny left all the goodies. Hope you were one of the lucky ones who had Easter Monday off, at least good Friday. The school children really have it made this week. Lots of people attended the Sunrise services and lots of Easter egg hunts all over the world. As for my family we had family get together and went on an old fashion picnic. It sure was great. 4-II Horsemen Busy By JULIE SMITH The month of March waa rery busy for members of the 3oots and Jeans 4-H Horse :iub. The first meeting was March 4 at the American region building. Members vere given permission for the lse of the building in ex :hange for the up-keep of the ouildlng. In the discussion, plans vere made for a clean-up day it the American Legion suilding. Also In the discussion, the Southeastern District 4-H Horse Show set for May 4 at Kinston came up. Members also discussed the need for a iorse clinic for members interested in participating. New members attending the meeting were Donald Richardson, Donna Milliken and Michael Willetts. The club by-laws were read. Horse camp was another interesting subject. Our money project was shown and explained. The second meeting was held March 18 at Vicki Sullivan’s home where she gave her demonstration on braiding the mane and tall for show purposes. More plans for a horse clinic, clean-up day and money projects were discussed at this meeting. Debbie Bowling and Alan Brittain were appointed by President Frank Mertz as committee co-chairmen of clean-up day set for March 28. Jeff Crouch was a new member at this meeting. Our horse clinic was held March 23. Sylvia Graham from Wilmington helped the group with form of riding at Mrs. Sullivan’s horse arena. There were eight par ticipants: Rebecca Willetts, Dean Robbins, Frankie Mertz, Cynthia Seagraves, Beverly Bryant, Debbie Bowling, Vicki Sullivan and Julie Smith. We were also busy with clean-up day on March 28. The group deserves much credit for all the work members put in that day. This couldn’t have been such a success without donated time and equipment of people in the community and surrounding communities. After hard work, a weiner roast was underway. Members brought food items for this event. The 4-H Horse Club s always open to new mem bership of youths age 9-19 and any adults interested in helping work with this youth group.
