'Extremely^ volatile' process
County property valuation
task goes to 'best', highest bid
By Holly Edwards
County Edita1
Revaluing Brunswick County's
90,000 parcels of property could be
an "extremely volatile" process that
will require highly professional and
highly trained people to carry it out,
county manager/attomey David Clegg
told the board of commissioners Mon
day night.
And to acquire those most qualified
personnel, commissioners voted 3-0
to enter into contract with the com
pany that submitted the most costly
proposal - Tax Management Associ
ates of Charlotte. Commissioners
Donald Shaw and Gene Pinkerton
were not at the meeting.
State law requires all counties to
conduct a general revaluation of all
real property every eight years.
Brunswick County's revaluation must
be completed in 1994.
Tax Management Associates sub
mitted a proposal to conduct the
county's revaluation for $834,900,
which is $122,400 more than the

Brunswick follows state trend
Robinson vote leads
ticket in low turnout
Redwine, Hill,
Soles selected
in district vote
By Jim Harper
Staff Writer
In a low -- 35 percent -- turnout
Brunswick County voters Tuesday
approved register of deeds Robert J.
Robinson as the Democratic
nominee in his bid for re-election in
the fall.
Robinson earned 2,893 votes in
the Democratic register of deeds
race, Edward F. Mintz received
2,187 votes and Grace Beasley had
2,012 votes. Robinson avoided a
runoff election by gamering slightly
more than 40 percent of the vote.
Democrat Tom Rabon, Sr., topped
the field in the District 4 county
commissioners race while Patricia
Young was the Republican selection
in that district.
Republican Bob Slockett was the
selection in county commissioner
District 3, and is to face Democrat
Wayland Vereen in the fall election.
Incumbent school board chairman
Donna Baxter defeated challenger
Bryant Pergerson for the District 4
Democratic nomination, and Billy
Carter was the Democratic nominee
in District 3.
Republican Janet Pope was the
Republican nominee in school board
District 1.
As expected, county resident Rep.
David Redwine was strong in his
race with Dewey Hill, Mike Mills
and Shirley Greene for two Demo
cratic nominations for the 14th
House District. Redwine received
4,176 Brunswick County votes, Hill
2,510, Mills 2,318 and Greene 746.

Shared police service
is among island topics
By Jim Harper
Staff Writer
A single police department for Oak
Island, a shared community planner
and cooperation in trash recycling
were topics that broadened commu
nity talks last week on what contribu
tions should be made to the operation
of the Long Beach Rescue Squad,
which serves all of Oak Island now.
Representatives of all three com
munities who participated character
ized the talks as "idea" sessions, felt
the exchanges had been healthy and
helpful and thought more discussion
of broader community cooperation
was likely.
Mayor Joan Altman, who repre
sented Long Beach with councilman
Danny Leonard, tended to downplay
the work in the sessions most. "In
essence, it was nothing but talk," she
said.
However, Altman and Leonard in
troduced a Long Beach plan for a
single police department serving the
island.
'It was a flow of ideas, an exchange of
information. People are thinking and not
being stagnant. 1 think that's significant.
It’s a positive thing.'
Bill Boyd
Caswell Beach commissioner
"Chief (Danny) Laughren had
drawn up some preliminary sugges
tions as to how a combined depart
ment could work," said Altman. "It
was a combination of existing depart
ments, of all personnel and equip
ment, with no suggestion for govern
ing of the department."
Commissioner Bill Boyd, who rep
resentedCaswell Beach, said he’d dis
cussed the Laughren plan with mayor
Jack Cook "and suggested that the
council members take a look at it as an
idea; that's where it lies; it’s gone no
further than that."
Yaupon Beach commissioner Joe
Broyles, who met with his fellow com
missioner Dot Kelly, said, "It's just a
proposal; certainly you'dexpect com
missioners to look at a proposal."
The separate sessions were to dis
cuss how Yaupon Beach and Caswell
Beach might be expected to help sup
port the Long Beach rescue squad,
which serves all three towns.
Last year they were requested for
the first time to formally contribute to
