Animal aid center
itself requires help
The Southport-Oak Island Animal
Reprieve has taken in nearly 50
homeless or injured dogs, cats and
kittens and now needs animal-lovers
to volunteer to either keep an animal
in their home for a week or two, or
come out to the reprieve and help
brush and walk the dogs.
Without the help of local
volunteers, the reprieve will have to
close at the end of the month, said
wildlife rehabilitator and reprieve
director Jcannine Friday.
There are nine dogs, 16 cats and
about 20 kittens now at the reprieve
waiting to be adopted. Friday said
the dogs in particular need attention
and affection. Kids or any dog
lovers could come to the reprieve tc
walk or brush the dogs, or perhaps
lake them to the beach and walk
them on a leash. Most of the dogs
are house-trained and love the
water, Friday said.
Those who would like to get more
involved can keep a dog or cat in
their home for a week or two. The
animal would belong to the reprieve,
and the volunteers would not be
adopting the animal, Friday stressed.
In addition, she said, any dona
tions of dog or cat food, and espe
cially cat litter, would be greatly ap
preciated.
If the reprieve is forced to close,
however, Friday said her wildlife re
habilitation service will continue,
and anyone can call her 24 hours a
day to report an injured animal.
For more information on the
reprieve or wildlife rehabilitation,
persons can contact Friday at 457
6340.
Pets of the week
An adult, female Siamese cat with blue eyes is now available for adop
tion at the Brunswick County Animal Control Center. She is said to be
very friendly, very loving and has beautiful markings. The adoption fee is
S10 and there will be no charge for a rabies vaccination since she has al
ready had her shots. Several kittens are also available at the shelter. The
adoption fee for them is $2 per kitten and the fee for a rabies vaccination is
S7.
Two "real cute" puppies are also up for adoption. They are both female
and appear to be part Labrador. One is white with tan spots and one is
blonde. They are said to be very affectionate and very playful. The adop
tion fee is S5 per puppy and the fee for a rabies vaccination is $7.
For more information, persons should contact the animal control center at
754-8204 or call toll-free 1-800-233-2169.
