Brunswick Shores effort falls short Post 68 wins, 445 loses finale By George Cox Sports Editor While Brunswick County Amer ican Legion Post 68 remained in regular-season pursuit of first place in Area II’s Eastern League Friday night with a 3-0 win over Warsaw, Post 10 maintained its game lead on the Leland team by crushing Bruns wick Shores Post 445,16-1. Coach Ed Lewis’ Post 68 outfit in creased its record to 15-2 and 18-3 overall with the win over Warsaw as Casey McBride, a rising sophomore at North Brunswick and brother of UNC-W rising sophomore Chris McBride, tossed a four-hitter while striking out five and walking four. Ironically, Chris threw a four hitter the previous night, losing to Wilmington Post 10 in a 5-2 defeat. Casey (5-1) also helped his own cause with an RBI double. Kelly Myers of Acme-Delco collected two hits and drove in a run. Shortstop Ed Lewis drove in the other Brunswick run. Post 68 scored lone runs in the first, third and seventh frames -- more than enough runs behind the hard-throwing McBride. At Legion Stadium in Wilmington, Post 10 pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Brunswick Shores’ errors to push 16 runs across the plate. Coach Dave Brewster’s team scored four times in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third to take a commanding 7-0 ad vantage after three innings. The Port City crew came up with six more runs in a big seventh after they scored three the previous in ning. Brunswick Shores’ lone run came in the top of the ninth. Brunswick Shores collected only five hits off Post 10 pitching. -Chris Lamarsh collected three hits in three trips to the plate for the win ners and Brian Britt collected two hits. Jason Bracey doubled for Brunswick Shores. Brunswick Shores’ quest for a playoff berth was thwarted with the emergence of Wilmington Winter Park in the final week of regular season play. White playing AAU ball during summer By George Cox Sports Editor South Brunswick’s premier point guard, Josh White, is playing sum mer AAU basketball in Wilmington after participating with his team mates in the University of North Carolina at Wilmington team camp last month. White will shoulder increased re sponsibility this season in the ab sence of graduated 6-foot-ll Preston McGriff, bound for the Uni versity of North Carolina at Wil mington. The senior Cougar will have to play a different role on a different kind of team next season and head coach Gene Doane is hoping that White will make marked improve ment oyer the summer — much like Michael Jordan did at Wilmington Laney and at the University of North Carolina. Great basketball players are bom in the hot, stuffy gymnasiums dur ing the summer months. That’s where they get to work on the indi vidual aspects of their game. It takes dedication and a lot of work and toil, but paying the price in the sum mer means great rewards in the winter on the hardwood. But principal Ed Lemon hired a gem in veteran coach Jim Brett of Tarboro, whose record parallels Hewett’s at the 3A level.
