Demolition should be complete this week. Construction of a new pier is planned by spring. U.S. Open casts off Thursday The U. S. Open King Mackerel Tournament - the best of the bunch - - gets underway Thursday for a four day run, again promising a whopping $100,000in prizes, including $25,000 for the largest entry. $10.000 for sec ond place and $5,000 for third. Enhancing the prize structure is the popular tournament-within-a-touma ment, but entrants are also greatly attracted by the guarantee of at least $250 for a fish in the top 50. In a field of 500 boats that means ten percent will at least win back their entry fee. That $240 fee (as well as the $100 fee for the tournament within) is pay able from 10 am. until midnight to morrow at tournament headquarters at the Southport Marina. Earlier reg istration is possible at the sponsoring Southport-Oak Island Chamber of Commerce office on Beach Road. A few salient points: •Checkout of boats on Friday and Saturday will be at Caswell dock, not at the Southport city pier as in the recent past: and at a pontoon boat anchored in Lockwood Folly Inlet, not ashore as last year. A checkout boat will also be at Masonboro Inlet in Wrightsville Beach. •Weigh-in will be at the Southport Marina, and only those fish in line by 5:30 p.m. will be weighed.
