‘Sister Act’ is movie feature
"Sister Act" is the feature attraction for Brunswick County Parks and
Recreation Department’s monthly movie time for seniors and their
families.
It will be shown at noon and 7 p.m. Friday, November 20, at the South
port seniors center on Atlantic Avenue. Popcorn and drinks will be pro
vided.
Charlotte is destination
Monday, November 23, is the deadline for reservations and payment for
an overnight trip to see the Singing Christmas Tree performed by the Char
lotte Choral Society. The trip is scheduled for Friday, December 11.
The cost is $56 a person and includes one-night accommodations with a
continental breakfast, transportation and admissions to Discovery Place in
Charlotte and the Singing Christmas Tree.

Program for adult scholars
Applications are being accepted for the Adult Scholars Leadership Pro
gram sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Divi
sion for Public Service and Extended Education.
Limited to 35 participants, the program is designed to bring older adults
together with community experts to learn more about issues, problems,
creative possibilities and future plans of the region.
Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. February 4,11, 18 and 25,
March 4, 11 and 18, and from 7 to 9 p.m. March 23. They will cover his
tory and government, regional grpwth and development, health, the depart
ment of aging, human relations, education, the arts, criminal justice and the
media.
The cost is $175 and includes a graduation reception, program and
resource materials, speaker honoraria, continental breakfasts, refreshments
and lunches.

Exercise classes scheduled
Exercise classes for seniors are sponsored by the Brunswick County
Parks and Recreation Department.
Slow rhythmic exercise classes are conducted at It) a.m. on Mondays at
the Town Creek Township District Park building. Exercises work on lim
bering joints and toning muscles.
Mature movement is offered at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
Long Beach Recreation Center and at the Lockwood Folly Township Dis
trict Park community center. Classes are also held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at
the Southport Community Building.
Pottery shoppers’ destination
A senior day trip to the Carolina Pottery in Smithlield is scheduled for
Wednesday, December 9. The trip will include a day of shopping at the
pottery along with supper at Holt Lake Barbecue and Seafood.
The cost is $7 a person and covers transportation. Space is limited.

Holiday shopping, show set
A holiday shopping trip to Barefoot Landing and the Christmas special at
the Dixie Jubilee in Myrtle Beach is scheduled for Wednesday, December
16.
Reservations and payment are due Wednesday, November 30. The cost is
$20 a person, which includes transportation.

January cruise to Bahamas
A Disney/Bahamas cruise for seniors is being planned by the Brunswick
County Parks and Recreation Department.
The trip, scheduled for January 18-25, includes hotel accommodations,
admission to the Walt Disney World Epcot Center, a cruise to Nassau and
meals. The cost is $648 per person based on double occupancy.

‘Love Light Tree’
to benefit Hospice
A "Love Light Tree" will be
sponsored during the holiday season
by Lower Cape Fear Hospice on the
grounds of Dosher Memorial Hospi
tal.
For a donation of $5 or more, indi
viduals or organizations can sponsor
a light on the tree in honor or in
memory of someone. A donation of
$25 or more will sponsor a light in
the star at the top of the tree. All
donations are tax-deductible.
Names of individuals recognized
with a donation to Hospice’s "Love
Light Tree" will be placed in a book
of honor displayed in the Dosher
hospital lobby. Hospice will ac
knowledge each gift with a card sent
to the individual honored or to the
family of the person honored.
Hospice volunteers and donors
will gather for a "Love Light Tree”
lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. Mon
day, December 7, on the grounds of
Dosher Memorial Hospital.

Street fair to highlight
Ruark event Nov. 27-28
A street fair including arts and
crafts, foods, live entertainment and
a lot of storytelling will be among
the highlights of the third annual
Robert Ruark Festival next
weekend.
Festival activities will begin at 10
a.m. Friday and Saturday, Novem
ber 27-28, and will be centered on
Moore Street between Howe and
Davis streets in Southport.
One of the festival’s newest ac
tivities will be storytelling focusing
on the life of author Robert Ruark,
his family and/or Southport, the way
it was when Ruark wrote about it in
The Old Man and the Boy. The
event is open to the public, and an
honorarium, funded by a grant from
the Brunswick County Arts Council,
will be provided to each person
selected to participate.
Also during the two-day festival,
winners of the statewide short story
contest for young writers will be an
nounced. Other events will include
performances by the newly
organized Southport Cloggers and
the Sea Notes Choral Society.
Donna Ray will serve as the festi
val’s mistress of ceremonies.
The Robert Ruark Festival,
sponsored by the Robert Ruark
Foundation, was created to honor
the nationally recognized writer who
was bom in Wilmington and spent
his summers in Southport visiting
his grandparents.

Woman’s club inviting
‘Holiday House’ items
Southport Woman’s Club is invit
ing all area residents to share their
holiday treasures for everyone to
view at the annual Holiday House.
The two-day event will be held
from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Decem
ber 5, and from noon to 6 p.m. Sun
day, December 6, at the Southport
Community Building. There is no
charge for admission.
This year, Holiday House will be
tied in with the city’s Bicentennial
celebration with the theme "Christ
mas Memories 1792-1992".
Entertainment is planned through
out both days. Refreshments will be
served and Mr. and Mrs. Santa
Claus will greet both children and
adults.

Luminaries light the way
Clear plastic two-liter soft drink containers are being collected to
light up the Southport waterfront for the Bicentennial Christinas
celebration.
The bottles will be made into luminaries to "provide a waterfront
glowing with candlelight during the upcoming 4200th Christmas’
celebration weekends,” the second and third weekends in Decem
ber.
The visitors center at 107 E. Nash Street will be the drop-off point
for the containers. For pick-up or more information, persons should
