Symphony will tune up
for holidays in concert
A family-oriented conceit for the
holiday season will open the North
Carolina Symphony season in
Brunswick County.
The concert will be at 8 p.m. Mon
day, November 30, in Hatch
Auditorium at the North Carolina
Baptist Assembly, Fort Caswell.
An old-fashioned Christmas sing
along is a highlight of the concert.
The program will feature a variety
of holiday music including Bach’s
"Ave Maria", Prokofiev’s "Winter
Bonfire" and Leontovich’s "Carol of
the Bells", as well as a Christmas
medley arranged by Carmen
Dragon.
Jackson Parkhurst, director of edu
cation for the North Carolina
Symphony, will conduct the eve
ning’s performance.
Those attending from the South
Brunswick Islands, Shallotte and
Supply areas of the county will be
able to take chartered buses to the
concert. The bus schedule is: 6 p.m.

Carolina Bank in Ocean Isle Beach;
7 p.m. South Brunswick Islands
Chamber of Commerce; and 7:15
p.m. Supply Baptist Church. Bus

is $1 per round trip, to be paid
directly to the bus driver.
Subscription tickets for the North
Carolina Symphony are available
through volunteers and at both
chambers of commerce, the South
port and Shallotte branches of the
Brunswick County Library and the
Blue Dolphin Gallery.
The subscriptions, S18 for general
admission and $14 for senior
citizens and students, include a tick
et for the May 10 concert planned as
the gala opening of the Odell Wil
liamson Auditorium at Brunswick
Community College.
The price of the subscription also
funds two children’s concerts to be
PARKHURST
held in April. These educational
concerts are arranged through
Brunswick County schools and are
free of admission costs to all third
through sixth grade students.
Single tickets for the holiday con
cert only will be available at the
door the evening of the concert
Prices will be $10 for general ad
mission and $8 for senior citizens
and students.

selling subscriptions to turn in their
ticket subscriptions and contribu
tions to the libraries as soon as pos
sible.
Lakes resident, Guys & Dolls
club recognized by extension
A Boiling Spring Lakes resident
was recognized as "member of the
year" by the Brunswick County Ex
tension Homemakers at the group’s
annual awards luncheon.
The Guys and Dolls Club was
recognized as the 1992 Brunswick
County Extension Homemakers
Club of the Year.
Julia Bailey, a member of the
Boiling Spring Lakes Extension
Homemakers Club, was awarded an
engraved silver bowl. Her name was
added to a plaque featuring past
honorees on display at the county
extension office at Bolivia.
During the past year Mrs. Bailey
donated 547 hours of her lime in ed
ucational and service type efforts,
reaching 9,886 people. Included in
this was teaching heritage skills,
working with 4-Hers, assistance
with the educational issues com
mittees, helping on District Day,
serving on the county council and
participating in many of her club’s
community service projects. Mrs.
Bailey also serves as a first vice
president for the extension
homemakers’ county organization
and is chairman of the global issues
educational committee.
"If she earned $5 an hour for her
volunteer work Mrs. Bailey would
have contributed nearly $3,000
worth of time to help others in her
club and Brunswick County," it was
pointed out.

Club are active in their community,
in the leadership of extension
homemakers and the Volunteers in
Extension Education Program.
Benefactors of the club’s service
projects include Brunswick Adult
Day Care, the American Red Cross
bloodmobile, the Adopt-a-Highway
program and Brunswick County
Senior Games. Members are active
in community appearance groups
and nursing home projects. They
participate in leadership op
portunities sponsored by extension
homemakers and promote many ed
ucational issues.
Several awards were given to ex
tension homemakers clubs for their
attention to different issues. The
Town Creek dub was honored for
family issues, Boiling Spring Lakes
club for environmental issues and
global issues and the Supply dub
for special projects.

‘Noise’s Off’
next theater
production
Brunswick Little Theater will
present its fall production "Noise’s
Off' on November 27-28 (in con
junction with the Robert Ruark Fes
tival) and December 4-5.
The production is a British com
edy that provides the audience an
entertaining view of what goes into
a little theater production. Act I is a
dress rehearsal. Act II goes behind
the scenes and Act III is the actual
production.
Tickets are available at the cham
ber of commerce office and
Sweetreat Ice Cream Parlor. Dis
counts are available for groups.
Curtain time is 8 p.m.
Funding for the production has
been provided by the Grassroots
Arts Program.

KAB mascot
The Keep America Beautiful
Committee of Brunswick County
Parks and Recreation Department
needs a mascot.
The public is invited to design a
mascot or come up with a name for
one and send it to the recreation de

RECREATION
Overnight trip to Charleston
An overnight trip to Charleston, S. C„ is planned for December 2-3.
Sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department,
the trip will cost $40 a person, based on double occupancy, and includes
lodging at the King Charles Inn, transportation, a tour of three historic
homes in Charleston and shopping along Market Street.
Space is limited. The deadline for reservations is November 24.

Camp, canoe Shelter Creek
A camping and canoe trip to Shelter Creek near Burgaw is scheduled Sat
urday and Sunday, November 21-22.
The cost will be approximately $20 a person depending upon the number
of participants. The cost includes camping, canoeing, breakfast on Sunday
and transportation. Participants will camp out and cat dinner Saturday
night at Hollins Fish Camp on N. C. 53.

Aerobics classes scheduled
Low-impact aerobics classes are offered through the Brunswick County
Parks and Recreation Department.
Hour-long classes are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at
the Town Creek community building; 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays
at the Brunswick County Government Center; 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thurs
days at the Lockwood Folly community building; and fiDO p ut. Wednes

"Christmas at the Biltmore" in Asheville is the destination of a bus tour
sponsored by the Southport Parks and Recreation Department
