Bill Willetts. Students in the class who are
responsible for raising the flag are Sean McKoy,

Barbara Simmons. Sally Lineberger is the teacher

South Brunswick Middle School
PTA, Inc., Southport Elementary
PTA and the South Brunswick High
School PTSA were all represented at
the North Carolina PTA convention
held October 30 through November
1 in Durham.
Leslie Collier, president of the
middle school PTA, and Beth Osiek,
president of the elementary school
PTA, attended the convention as
voting delegates from their respec
tive schools to bring back informa
tion to share with all PTA units in
Brunswick County.
The convention theme was "Home
Is Where The Start Is".
Collier and Osiek attended ten dif
ferent workshops on such subjects
as leadership styles, survival and
success for middle school parents
and students, parents’ rights in a
child’s education, PTA councils,
grant writing, community/education
partnerships and award-winning
parent involvement programs.
Leland PTA units were
represented at the convention by
Leland Middle School principal
Diana Mintz and assistant principal
Doyle Brinson. Also in attendance
were Leland Middle School PTA
president Lynn Atkinson and secre
tary Diane Graham; Lincoln Pri
mary School PTA president Tina
Childs and vice-president Letha
Thomas; and South Brunswick High
School PTSA president Polly Grady.

was represented by teacher Thomas
Arnold.

attended the convention along with
member-at-large James Bryant.
Both state and national FT A issues
were discussed during the four gen
eral sessions of the convention.
Among items on the agenda were
state legislative issues affecung the
health, education and welfare of
children and youths. Part of the
PTA’s purpose as stated in the na
tional PTA bylaws is "to secure ade
quate laws for the care and protec
tion of children and youth."
Speight, Gore are candidates
for Morehead awards at UNC
Charlie Edward Speight of South
Brunswick High School and Emily
Bymina Gore of West Brunswick
have won North Carolina Merit
Awards to attend the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina Merit Award
program, introduced in the fall of
1990, awards up to 220 one-time,
$500 scholarships annually to local
students in competition for the
Morehead Award.
Speight and Gore will advance to
the Southeast Region competition
for the Morehead Award on Decem
ber 15 in Jacksonville.

gram benefits every county in the
state. At least one student in each
county receives a Merit Award.
Speight and Gore were selected
from among six high school
nominees chosen earlier by area
high schools. Interviews were con
ducted by the Brunswick County Se
lection Committee.
At the school and county competi
tion levels the selection process for
the North Carolina Merit Award and
the Morehead Award are the same.
Nominees are judged on four
criteria: leadership, scholarship,
character and physical vigor.
Morehead Awards provide all
expense-paid undergraduate educa
tions at UNC. The value of an award
for a North Carolina resident is

DECA officer
Jennifer Davis, a senior at South
Brunswick High School, has been
elected DECA District 4 president.
She is vice-president of the local
chapter and plans to run for state
vice-president representing the
Dixie Pines Region. She is the
daughter of Phyllis and Larry
Hendrick and is co-captain of the
cheerleaders, a member of Stu
dents Against Violating the Earth,
National Honor Society, Spanish
Club and Interact and is being
trained as a peer tutor in the well
ness program.

County students for academic
achievements.

named to the President’s List for
maintaining a 4.0 grade point aver
age.
Victoria K. Lee of Long Beach,
