‘The
Qrape
Vine
by Jim Hinkson
This is the time of year when the ne
gotiants send us their Beaujolais nou
veau, the fresh-from-the-fermenting
tanks wine, light and short-lived, that
offers a taste of the regular vintage to
come.
But the best bet for wine lovers may be
the regular vintage past: the 1991
Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages, not
to mention the Beaujolais crus Brouilly,
Chen as Cotes de Brouilly, Fleurie, Reg
nie, Chiroubles, Julienas, Morgon,
Moulin-a-Vent and St. Amour.
The weather was perfect for grape
growing that summer in the Beaujolais
region. The grapes were sweet and ripe
enough to be harvested well before the
rains that diluted other grapes.
Indeed, the wines of ’88, '89 and VO were
also exceptionally good and are worth
buying even now. Though Beaujolais is
usually drunk young, the wine of a good
year lasts longer. The 1991 will be long
lived, too.
A limited supply of 1992 Nouveau
Beaujolais is due at the Beverage Bam
this weekend.
