Rainy weekend doesn’t dampen volunteer spirit By Joanne Wesson Executive Director Southport 2000 The rainy weekend caused the Southport Beautification Committee to postpone painting the pump sta tion, so everyone turned their efforts to landscaping the area around the swings. The canna lilies in the brick planter were transplanted to Water front Park and were replaced by low evergreens. At the end of the brick wall, shrubs were planted to define the area. This green spot also in cludes a crepe myrtle, a dogwood and a weeping yaupon. Of course, these three trees can be added to the goal to plant 200 trees for the Bicentennial. This community project involved the beautification committee, city staff. Maritime Landscaping, elected officials, Southport 2000, the ILA and other volunteers. This is just an other example of how diverse groups work together with a com mon goal of beautifying Southport while preserving its heritage. Working feverishly to finish be fore the rain set in were Fred Smart ley, Carol Milliken, Barbara Gray, Norman Holden, Meezie Childs, Sylvia Butterworth, Joanne Wesson, Paul Moore and Henry Rose. Last week the tree spade from POT was back in town to continue the planting of oak trees along state rights-of-way. The project will pick lip again this week or next until some 70 trees are planted. This pushes the project close to the goal of planting 200 trees for the Bicentennial. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Harper for donating trees for this planting as well as the earlier project Seniors will meet Town Creek Senior Citizens will next meet Thursday, December 3, at noon at the Town Creek Township District Park community building.
