Mr. and Mrs. C. Michael Russ of Shallotte have announced the
engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Mary
Elisabeth, to Michael Todd King of Carolina Beach. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Michael R. King of Asheboro. Friends and relatives are
invited to attend the wedding at 3 p.m. January 9 in Camp United
Methodist Church, Shallotte. The bride-elect earned a bachelor of
science degree in elementary education from Fast Carolina University
in 1991 and is currently teaching at Supply Elementary School. Her
fiance attended Fast Carolina University, received his captain's license
from the U. S. Coast Guard and is currently owner and captain of
Class Action Charters at Carolina Beach.
MEETING
AARP chapter meets Dec. 10
Chapter 4180 of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP),
will hold its annual Christinas meeting on Thursday, December 10, at noon
at the Sandfiddler Restaurant near Southport.
"No agenda is planned for this meeting,” announced president jimmy
Wolfe. "We’re just going to get together for some good fellowship and
Christmas cheer."
NARFE meets next Tuesday
The Brunswick County Chapter of the National Association of Retired
Federal Employees (NARFE) will hold its monthly meeting at the
Sparctime Restaurant, Shallotte. on Tuesday, December S, at noon.
Members will be entertained by The Fabulous 40’s musical group.
All members and prospective members are urged to attend. NARFE
meetings are open to the public and membership in NARFE is available to
all federal retirees and federal employees with at least live years of service.

Symphony concert adds to holiday spirit
Area residents enjoyed a delightful holiday eoneert Monday night when
the North Carolina Symphony made it' hr a appearance of the current year
at Hatch Auditorium. The entire program -aas designed around the time of
year, and especially Christmas.
Conducted by Jackson Parkhurst. who remembered the "flashiiaht
brigade of a former near-disastrous appearance several years ago and
having for the first time two local musicians - Bernard I i\the and ho for

well-received by an appreciative audience.
During the first half of the evening, musical selections were three anas
from Puccini's "La Boheme", which ere melodic and quietly beautiful.
Then "The Skater's Waltz" and two Hanukkah pieces, one being “Feast oi
Lights", were followed by.Victor Herbert's "Festival March" wliiJi con
tained recurring passages from the old-time New Year's refrain Auld
