Kevin Smith (25) plays a strong supporting role in a new South Brunswick style that features quick ness — particularly that of senior guard Josh White, who averaged 38.5 points the first two games. Quick Cougs are impressive; White scores school record 46 By George Cox Sports Editor After a record 46-point per formance from his point guard posi tion Friday night, leading South Brunswick’s Cougars to their sec ond solid win of the young Season, the question arises whether Josh White can come close to that this Friday night at home against 4A Wilmington Lancy. The Cougars, who played Wil mington New Hanover in the sea son’s third game Tuesday night (see related story), have a tough assign ment against coach Fred Lynch’s Port City team. The Buccaneers, led by Adrian McCrac’s 30 points, blasted Pender, 88-67, Friday night to spurt to a 2-0 mark prior to Tues day night’s action. White, leading a quick, pressing South Brunswick edition which scored 104 points in an opening win over Topsail a week ago, was sup ported amply by forward Kevin Smith’s 18 points. Against the Pirates, White scored 31 points. But the Cougars’ dismal 15-for-29 free throw performance had coach Gene Doanc worried at the begin ning of this week. Still Doanc, whose Cougar teams have now es tablished a 69-17 record over the past three-plus seasons, was pleased with the victory over East Columbus — a club he says will be much like last year’s Fairmont team next year when that school enters the newly they aren’t con sistent yet. Some of them who showed up against Topsail, weren’t there against East Columbus. It’s a learning process and they must real ize they have got to be ready to play every night out.’ Gene Doane Cougars head coach aligned Waccamaw 2A-3A Confer ence. White hit 17 field goals and nine of 13 free throws en route to his sterling night on the hardwood. The question is whether opponents will now throw a box-and-one on the Cougar star or some tricky defenses to keep him out of the scoring column. "We have some young kids," Cox column Continued from page 12 assistants after Friday night’s eastern championship win over St. Pauls. "This is the best staff I’ve ever worked with," the veteran coach empha sized. "For example, I don’t ever have to coach the defense. I’ve got three guys who just get it done." Brett was fortunate to inherit an excellent staff of assistants. Many a good head mentor has been doomed by a staff of either unqualified or un cooperative assistants. Operating as both head football coach and athletic director Brett, a meticulous organizer, has brought all of the West Brunswick coaches closer together during his initial season - a move that will not only pay dividends in the operation of the football program, but also in the function of Trojan athletics overall. Doane observed Sunday. "And they aren’t consistent yet. Some of them who showed up against Topsail, weren’t there against East Columbus. It’s a learning process and they must realize they have got to be ready to play every night out. "Kevin Smith could have had a 30-point night had he hit his free throws (five of 11). He helped us put the game away. Josh hit a three and Kevin came back and hit two." The South Brunswick coach con tinued, saying, "This team is still finding its way. They’ve got to take the next step up. But through two games, they’ve been improving. We had to match up against a lot of quickness — a team quicker than we were - against East Columbus." Doane said Scooter Moore had an "off game”, scoring just 11 points, and Tyrell Hewett didn’t come close to equaling the 18-point game he had against Topsail. "Defensively, we gave up shots we don’t like, but we were pressing and that’s gonna happen when you press sometimes. O. J. Morris and Lewis Vaught did a good job on the press." After Friday night’s action the Cougars remain idle until December 21 when they will participate in a three-day Myrtle Beach tournament prior to a holiday break until the first of the year. "A game like this really doesn’t help us very much," observed coach Mike Isenberg. "We obviously were much more talented and had a lot more depth than Topsail. We had a few spurts where we played really well but most of the time the game was sloppy. I was glad that all 14 girls got to play a lot, but I hope that a game like this does not get us in a habit of playing sloppily." Defense keys Lady Coug win South Brunswick’s Lady Cougars used a tough man-to-man pressure defense to defeat the East Columbus Lady Gators 51-16 Friday night in Boiling Spring Lakes. East Columbus failed to score more than five points in any quarter. "I thought that we played one of our better defensive games,” stated coach Mike Isenberg. "Our guards kept constant pressure on their ball-handlers and our forwards denied the entry pass. At times our defense was about as good as any girls can play." Erika Bryant had 13 points to lead the South Bruns wick girls in scoring while Jennifer Fullwood con tributed 11 points, six rebounds and six steals. All 15 team members saw action for the Lady Cougars. According to Isenbcrg, "Our defense improved tonight but our half-court offense is still sluggish and we need to work on that. We’re just not as aggressive and confident as we should be on offense, but we will work hard to get better." South Brunswick 15 14 14 8 - 51 East Columbus 4 5 3 4- 16 South Brunswick: M.
