Holiday happenings continue this weekend with the 200th Christmas
Waterfront Celebration at Yuletide Harbor in Southport and other com
munity activities.
Located at the comer of Bay and Howe streets, the festively decorated
Yuletide Harbor will be the setting for a candy cane hunt beginning at 10
a.m. Saturday, December 19. Santa is expected to arrive at 10:30 a.m. and
at 11 a.m. John Snyder will entertain the audience with his storytelling.
Linda Tronzo and Sea Clef Studios will be featured at noon.
Children of all ages are invited to dress their pets in holiday fashions and
put them on parade at 1 p.m. The Southport Seacoast Cloggers will per
form at 2 p.m., and the Southport Senior Citizens Choir at 3 p.m. And, at 5
p.m. the Southport waterfront along Bay Street will be aglow with
luminaries.
More Christmas activities and entertainment are planned at Yuletide Har
bor on Sunday, December 20, beginning at 1 p.m. with the arrival of Santa
Claus. Other scheduled performances include the St James Christmas
Choir at 3 p.m., the Chanty Singers at 4 p.m. and the Oak Island Pres
byterian Church choir at 5 p.m. The 200th Christmas finale will begin at
5:30 p.m. with an open invitation to what is being billed as a "sparkling
sing-along".
The Sea Notes Choral Society will perform Handel’s "Messiah" at 8 p.m.
Thursday, December 17, at Southport Baptist Church. Cindy Sellers will
be the director and Teresa Watkins Quintero the accompanist. Soloists in
clude Carmen Coles, Cynthia Smith, Eleanor Potter Smith and Ed Hardin.
Dr. Robert Baxter, who played die leading role in "Christopher Columbus:
His Story" and who last week was the bass soloist for "Walk in Messiah"
with the Wilmington Symphony, will be a featured performer.
Other musical holiday programs will be presented on Sunday, December
20, at many area churches. All of the programs begin at 7 p.m. unless
otherwise noted.
Southport Baptist Church will host a dramatic presentation of the Christ
mas story through monologue and dialogue. The adult choir of First Baptist
Church of Boiling Spring Lakes will present a Christmas cantata.
The Ocean View United Methodist Church chancel choir will present its
Christmas cantata "A Simple Christmas" by Lani Smith at the 8:30 and 11
a.m. worship services. The choir will be directed by Beverly Fitzgerald.
That evening at 7 p.m. the children's and youth departments will present
their first Christmas play, directed by Wanda Wheeler.
The adult choir of First Baptist Church of Oak Island will present a
Christmas cantata entitled "This Litde Child" at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The
cantata was created and arranged by Don Hart and will be directed by
Thom Clemmons.
The chancel and handbell choirs of Trinity United Methodist Church will ,
join for the performance of four anthems at the 11 a.m. worship service
and the Rev. P. D. Midgett will do a first-person characterization of "Amon
the Shepherd". At 7 p.m. a Christmas pageant, including the Sonshine Pup
pet Co., the chancel choir, the children’s choir, a band and traditional
nativity is planned.

Buckner-Ross vows are said
Pauline Ross of Caswell Beach and Eden and Earl Buckner of Graham
were united in marriage November 14 at First Presbyterian Church of
Eden. The Rev! Jay Click officiated.
The couple was attended by the bride’s grandsons, Mike Heffinger of Or
lando, Fla., and Greg Heffinger of Charlotte.
They received their guests at Meadow Greens Country Club and took a
honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean.
The Buckners divide their time between residences at Oak Island Villas
and in Greensboro.

Luminaries a highlight
of waterfront activities

Saturday night the waterfront was
one great, long avenue of twinkling
lights. The luminary display started
at Kingsley Street, curved around
the Riverwatch subdivision, ran
along the river past Waterfront Park,
along Bay Street to Yacht Basin
Street and on Brunswick Street to
Short Street.
The magnificent display guided
people as they walked the tour route,
stopping at open houses along the
way. The weather was perfect; a
clear, calm evening with a winter
chill. And did you see that full moon
coming up over the river? It was like

ARTS &. ENTERTAINMENT
Author will sign new book
C. H. Scott, author of Tales from the Tropics, will be at Little Professor
Book Center Friday and Saturday to sign copies of his books.
Scott, the son of actor Randolph Scott, was bom and reared in Beverly
Hills, Calif., but relocated to Long Beach to write. His first book is a col
lection of seven short stories drawn from his 32 years experience as a
sailor. They are sailing stories, "but a whole lot more than that,” he said,
describing them as "good stories... designed to make people smile."
Scott will be at Little Professor from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 18,
and from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, December 19.
