Spec. Terrence L. Tobler, son of
Mrs. Ennis Tobler of Southport, has
received the Army Achievement
Medal for his service with Head
quarters and Headquarters Battery,
5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artil
lery in Korea.
The award cited Tobler’s service
as a repair parts clerk.
"Your performance is in keeping
with the highest traditions of the
military service, and truly reflects
great credit upon yourself, the 2nd
Infantry Division and the United
States Army.”
Tobler, a 1991 graduate of South
Brunswick High School, has since
been promoted from private first
class to his present rank and been
assigned to Fort Hood, Texas.
Basic training
Pvt. First Class Christopher E.
Evans has completed basic training
at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
During the training, students
received instruction in drill and
ceremonies, weapons, map reading,
tactics, military courtesy, military
justice, first aid, and Army history
and traditions.
He is the son of Bobby G. and Joni
S. Evans of Southport The private
is a 1992 graduate of South Bruns
wick High School.
Basic training
Pvt. Beverly A. Brookshire has
completed basic training here at Fort
Leonard Wood, Mo.
During the training, students
received instruction in drill and
ceremonies, weapons, map reading,
tactics, military courtesy, military
justice, first aid, and Army history
and traditions.
The soldier is the daughter of
Johnny A. Brookshire of Supply.
She is a 1992 graduate of West
Brunswick High School.
Franklin promoted
Todd V. Franklin had been
promoted in the U. S. Air Force to
the rank of master sergeant.
Franklin, an aerospace control and
warning systems technician, is the
son of Thomas V. Franklin, Sr., of
Rt. 1, Supply, and Constance J.
Power of Salem, Oregon.
Aglow meets
Jan Blake of Wilmington will be
the guest speaker for the December
meeting of Southport Women’s
Aglow.
The meeting will be at 10 a.m.
Saturday, December 19, at the
Southport Senior Citizens Center on
Atlantic Avenue. Refreshments will
be served at 9:30 a.m.
Blake, who overcame problems
associated with depression, al
coholism and attempted suicide, is
now the North Carolina state prayer
coordinator for Aglow International.
Christmas musical
The First Baptist Church of Oak
Island will present its Christmas mu
sical on Sunday, December 20.
The cantata is entitled "This Little
Child" and will be directed by Thom
Clemmons. The adult choir will per

During the 11 o’clock worship service on Sunday, December 20, the
Rev. P. D. Midgett will do a dramatic, first-person characterization of :
Amon the Shepherd. The presentation, without script and in period
costume, will be a reliving of the Christmas story as one of the
shepherds might have experienced it. The public is invited to attend.
‘Christmas Angels’ the topic
"No Wonder There Were Angels at Christmas” will be the Rev. Richard I
DePriter’s sermon topic on Sunday, December 20, at Oak Island Pres
byterian Church. The service will begin at 10:15 a.m.
Text for the sermon will be taken from Luke 2:1-20.
The chancel choir’s Christmas program, "A. Ceremony of Carols: !
Prophecy Through Fulfillment", was postponed last weekend and will be
presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 20. Guest soloists will be soprano
Carmen Coles and flautist Nancy Hall. Linda Tronzo will be the director
and organist. DePriter will be the reader throughout the program.
At 7 p.m. Christmas Eve, Oak Island Presbyterian Church will celebrate
the birth of Jesus with a scripture, Christmas carol and communion wor
ship service. DePriter’s sermon topic will be ”We Are the 20th Century
Shepherds".
Methodist program Sunday
Trinity United Methodist Church will present a Christmas program Sun
day, December 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.
The program will feature a narration of the Christmas story including
puppets, choirs and orchestra. "All are invited to share in this reminder of
the reason we celebrate," a release stated.
Refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall following the pro
gram.
‘Characters, Carols’ service
A unique worship service entitled "Characters and Carols of Christmas"
will be held at Southport Baptist Church this Sunday, December 20, at 7
p.m.
The service will blend the music of the season with a series of skits and
character sketches of "those whose lives were forever changed by the com
ing of the Christ child," a release stated. "Come sing the songs and relive
the drama of Christmas through this worship experience."
The public is invited to attend.
Mill Creek presents cantata
The adult choir of Mill Creek Baptist Church near Winnabow, directed
by Sandra Tyner, will present a cantata entitled "Christmas" on Sunday,
December 20, at 7 p.m.
The Rev. Rocky L. Gregory, pastor, will lead the congregation in a cand
lelight service to conclude the program. Refreshments and a social period
will follow in the church fellowship hall.
On Tuesday, December 22, at 7:30 p.m. the children and youth choirs
will present a Christmas musical entitled "Twinkle and the All-Star Angel
Band". This production is directed by Wana Batson, Susan Bowling and
Ruth Gore. "Twinkle", the "star" of the angelic production, learns a lesson
that God can use her just as she is.
The public is invited to attend these events.
‘Lessons and Carols’ service
The traditional "Lessons and Carols" service will be conducted at the
Southport Presbyterian Church this Sunday, December 20, during the 11
a.m. worship hour.
The Fellowship Singers will present carols from various nations. Readers
for the occasion are Bert and Norma Buckbee.
Lutherans to get the ‘point’
St. Peter Lutheran Church will observe the Fourth Sunday in Advent on
December 20 at the 11 a.m, service with the sermon topic "The Whole
Point of Christmas".
Pastor Charles McManus will state that a unique mood and spirit associa
ted with a holiday or an almost carnival atmosphere could lull people into
missing the real meaning of Nativity. The sermon will also warn against
becoming overly sentimental with the Birth of Christ. The Sacrament of
Holy Communion will be celebrated at the service.
The Christmas Eve candlelight service will be held at 8:30 p.m. with the
Sacrament of Holy Communion.
Alliance plans ‘Celebration’
The public is invited to attend "A Christmas Celebration" by Bob Krog
stad at the Cape Fear Alliance Church on Sunday, December 20, at 5:30
p.m.
"A Christmas Celebration" is designed as "a feast of music, with careful
ly chosen carols and hymns which have endeared themselves to the public
over the course of many decades and in many lands," a release noted.
"While bringing us a contemporary focus to the heart of the story, the
warmth of several new Christmas creations will sustain the traditional
tone."
The congregation will join with the choir on selected hymns. Soloists in
clude Carmen Coles, Debbie Galdo, Cam Sauls, Rebecca Turner, Caleb
Waters and Bill Woodbury.
