Scampering Steve Holmes scored two Trojan tqjichdowns Saturday as West Brunswick took the Photo by Jim Harper state 2A championship in Kenan Stadium at UNC. Holmes was chosen offensive MVP for his effort. Champs! Continued from 1C Brian Fleming. The Trojan defense stiffened and forced a Blue Devil punt after three plays, but it was partially blocked and sailed straight up in the air, landing for a minus two yards at the 27-yard line with 7:38 showing on the clock. "I remember thinking we are going to get it in, this is our golden opportunity," Brett said in the post game interviews. The Trojan offense responded as Butler ran for three yards on the first play before being stopped on the second for no gain. Holmes ran right for one before William Stanley did the same for six to the 17. On a first-and-ten at the 17, Butler rammed up the middle again for two yards and Holmes was then stopped cold for no gain. Holmes then took a toss going left and scampered into the comer of the end zone at 4:04. Hawes’ PAT gave West Brunswick a comfortable 14-0 lead that turned out to be uncomfortable before the game was over. The Blue Devils got possession later in the quarter with 1:51 left to play at their 35. Two pass inter ference penalties plus a 27-yard pass play and a nine-yard run pushed the pigskin to the seven, where quarter back Matt Rummage hurled a flat pass to Brent Jenkins for a touch down with 30 seconds left to play. r 1 Lady Cougs host Christmas tourney The South Brunswick Lady Cougars will host the 1992 South Brunswick Holiday Basketball Tournament on December 28-30 at South Brunswick High School. In that contest White, who scored 31 and 46 points - a school record - against Topsail and coach Gary Batde’s East Columbus club, was totally ineffective, as was practically the entire team on defense as New Hanover scored layup after layup on a devastating fast break. The Cougars were supposed to have played Wilmington Laney last Friday night, but that game was postponed until January 6 because of exams. In South Brunswick’s opening win over Topsail the team’s 104 points gave indication that Doane’s team has potential and promise. Isenberg’s girls easily defeated Topsail’s Lady Pirates, 97-21, to open the season and then buried East Columbus, 51-16. The Lady Cougars then journeyed to New Hanover to beat the Wildcats. Erica Bryant, last year’s county player of the year, scored 26 points in the opener and 13 against East Columbus. She led South Brunswick against New Hanover with 14 points. After the loss to New Hanover, Doane said his team was still find ing its way and couldn’t justify playing so poorly despite the 94-foot floor. He found it disturbing that his team got beat so badly down the floor on defense and that White had such a lackluster performance against the 4A team. Doane is still playing a number of combinations in preparation for the Waccamaw 2A Conference season. The Cougar boys play in a tourna ment at Myrtle Beach next Monday and Tuesday before taking time off for the holidays until after the first of the year.
