West Brunswick Trojans were a happy bunch Saturday after the
third-place Waccamaw 2A Conference team went all the way to the
state championship. The Trojans defeated previously unbeaten teams
each of the final three weeks to claim the title.
‘Never a spare moment’
West took different approach
to Chapel Hill and title match
By George Cox
Sports Editor
CHAPEL HILL - After learning
from his players that the 1991 West
Brunswick Trojans had difficulty
focusing on playing the North Caro
lina 2A championship game against
eventual winner Thomasville last
December, new West Brunswick
mentor Jim Brett prepared a game
plan last week which included dif
ferent travel plans prior to Satur
day’s state title game against
Maiden’s Blue Devils.
"They never had a spare moment,"
Brett said in the winning locker
room after the regular North Caro
lina High School Athletic Associa
tion post-game interview at Kenan
Stadium on the University of North
Carolina campus.
Instead of taking his players to
Chapel Hill on Thursday like pre
vious coach Marshall Seay did prior
to last December’s state title contest,
Brett waited and took his players
Friday morning. Brett, his staff and
players attended Friday night’s 3A
title game and then went straight to
bed to rest for Saturday’s noon kick
off.
The Waccamaw 2A Conference
has received quite a bit of statewide
recognition during the past couple
seasons. While the Trojans were
finishing second and third only to
peak in the playoffs, East Bladen
and Whiteville were winning regular
season titles. The Trojans’ state title
once again establishes the Wac
camaw as one of the Old North
State’s strongest football leagues.
Maiden’s Tom Brown has coached
his Blue Devil teams to a 41-8-1
record during the past four seasons
and Maiden has an all-time playoff
record of 14-12. A native of
Lewiston, Pa., and former Lenoir
Rhyne College football standout,
Brown has coached the Blue Devils
to a 177-49-6 mark during his 24
year stint.
Careerwise, Brown’s record stands
just one game below the 200-carcer
win mark at 199-69-7. Brown’s son
Brian guided the Fred T. Forad girls
basketball team to a state 3A
championship earlier in 1992, so
this was a unique father-son com
bination going for state titles this
year.
Brett, an Ahoskie High School
graduate, has a 19-year head coach
ing mark of 163-61 and was recently
named Waccamaw 2A Conference
coach of the year. The Trojans were
averaging 315 yards per game in to
tal offense prior to the Maiden con
test with 280 of that coming via the
rush.
Ball control was the ultimate key
to the Trojans’ success as Brett’s
team averaged 15 more offensive
plays than opponents prior to the
state championship contest.
Defensively, West Brunswick
yielded 127 yards per contest - 95
on the ground. Since 1972, the
Trojans have recorded a 11-6-1
mark in post-season play in seven
trips to the 3A and 2A playoffs.
The running duo of West Bruns
Cox column continued from 1C
way to a loss.
However, the Wolfpack, which fell to St. Pauls, would have had its hands
full if they had to play West Brunswick in the eastern finals. The Trojans,
who have had six straight winning seasons, may have handled the
Whiteville defense in a much different fashion the second time around.
Lemon picked a plum in Brett
When Marshall Seay resigned as West Brunswick football coach last
spring Trojan principal Ed Lemon, a strong believer in a quality athletic
program, had a lot of choice plums to pick from. Seay's five winning sea
sons in succession and the state runner-up finish made the West Brunswick
job attractive.
Contrary to popular belief, former Tabor City and Wallace-Rose Hill
mentor Jack Holley, who left Wilmington Laney after the principal who
hired him was transferred, was never seriously in the running for the West
Brunswick job. Lemon wanted a coach who would stick for a number of
years and Holley didn’t fit that bill. He also may have been a bit too con
troversial for Lemon and the community.
Lemon knew from observers across the state that Brett has one of the
best football minds around. And with his class and charisma, he was a nat
ural for the job.
Ironically, Brett was scheduled to be interviewed for the South Bruns
wick job after Glenn Sasser resigned but tip interview was canceled by
then-principal Mose Lewis, who decided that he needed to look no further
when Bill Hewett wanted to leave Whiteville.
A few years ago, no one in his right mind would have said Brunswick
County could attract the top football coaches in eastern North Carolina to
their programs. That’s not the case anymore. •'
Bill Hewett at South Brunswick and Jim Brett at West Brunswick have
three state championships in their garages along with a bundle of confer
ence championships and playoff victories.
' _ Let’s hope Hewett’s Cougars turn the comer next season and Brunswick
has two of the top 3A teams in North Carolina. Wouldn’t a West
Brunswick-South Brunswick eastern final one season make everyone
smile?
Use the classifieds — 457-4568
wick senior fullback Aaron Butler
and junior Steve Holmes finished
the season in superb fashion.
Holmes, who led the rushing game
against Maiden with two touch
downs and 76 yards on 13 carries,
finished the campaign with 166 car
ries and 1,386 yards. Butler carried
203 times for 1,318 yards. Holmes
was voted the West Brunswick
defensive player of the game while
Holmes captured offensive honors.
Antoine Ikard, North Carolina’s
all-time leading prep rusher, gained
308 yards against West Davidson in
a playoff game. He also had three
200-plus games during the regular
season. Ikard became the state’s all
time leading rusher in the 21-0 vic
tory over Thomasville in the 2A
western finals.
The victory over Thomasville, a
21-6 victor over West Brunswick in
the 2A finals a year ago, was
Maiden’s 300th football victory.
The bruising Blue Devils averaged
340 yards an outing on the ground
behind Ikard, but were held to just
207 against the Trojans.
