Food training is suggested All food service managers and owners in Brunswick County will be re quired to complete a two-day training course on safe food-handling proce dures if the health board adopts a proposed food service manager certifica tion ordinance. The ordinance would require all managers and owners to be certified once every three years. While it does not target employees, it requires a certified person to be present at the establishment at all times. Therefore unless the manager wants to work all the time, at least one other employee would have to be certified. A public hearing on the proposal will be held Monday, January 25, at 7 p.m. in the health department conference room at the county government center near Bolivia. "We’re not trying to shut anybody down," said health board chairman Skip Davis. But if we can educate people as to what causes disease in the food service industry, they’ll stop it themselves." However, the ordinance would enable the health department to revoke a restaurant’s license if the manager repeatedly refuses to become certified, or fails the certification course. A copy of the proposal is available at the county health department. o Our stafy wishes you and your family a happy Christmas and a fruitful new year. Driver Susan Gore pulled bus 88 onto the shoulder of N. C. 87 about 3:30 p.m. Monday when she noticed smoke coming from the dashboard. All 28 students aboard were evacuated safely and walked the half-mile back to the school as the bus became engulfed in flames. The Boiling Spring Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and emergency management coordinator Cecil Logan were called to the scene. George Brown, director of transportation, said Logan explained the fire was caused when the fuse block grounded. "If it grounds with all that current going through it, it can make a mess," Brown said. The eight-year old bus had no history of electrical problems and nothing like this has occurred before on a Brunswick County school bus, he said. Brown said vibrations from travel ing on bumpy dirt roads probably caused the block to work loose from the bus frame and short out. "It’s something that’s very rare," he said. "This is the first time I’ve ever known it to happen." Even so, he said other buses will "definitely" be checked so some BUSINESS LOANS Existing or new businesses. Commercial; industrial and farming.
