Making
contact with
the hosel of
the club instead
of the club face is
called shanking. A
detriment to proper
hitting, it has four
possible causes.
Here’s the second
of four:
Cause
■ You may be rolling the club
face open on the backswing,
throwing the club out of
.balance. On the forward swing
the club loops outside the target
line, causing a shank.
Cure
■ Don't roll the club on the
backswing. Keep your hands in
the same position as at address.
■ When you reach about
waist-high on the backswing,
cock the club straight upward
throughout the rest of the
backswing.
■ This will make the club
lighter, more balanced and
improve the downswing. It will
prevent you from shoving the
hosel into the ball.

Cardinals defeat
Tigers, then Lions
The Cardinals overwhelmed the
Tigers 20-4 in Dixie Youth softball
play May 16 and defeated the Lions
13-9 on May 19.

Lockamy and Lyndsey Dishman had
two hits in the win over the Tigers.
One of Collier’s hits was a grand
slam homer, and Dishman also hit a
home run.
For the Tigers Lisa Matvia had a
pair of hits.
In the win over the Lions, Dis
hman had four hits and Brittney
Collier had three. For the Lions,
Sara Novotny, Carolyn Porterfield,
Jannetle Radford, Merinda Dail and
Megan Murphy each had two hits.
In earlier action, the Tigers wal
loped the Lions 24-5 on May 12,
and on May 17 the Lions defeated
the Sandfiddlers 6-2 with a four-run
rally in the fourth inning featuring a
homer by Jennifer Radford and a tri
ple by Annie Schafer.
