King benefit
Members of the Bolivia Volunteer
Fire Department will hold an all
you-can-eat spaghetti dinner in
memory of Albert F. King on Satur
day, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
at Brunswick County Republican
headquarters.
Plates will be $5 for adults and $3
for children 12 and under. Free
delivery is available with the pur
chase of five or more plates. For
delivery persons may call 754-4011.
All proceeds will help the family
pay for funeral expenses.
Playground help
Southport Elementary School is
seeking volunteers to help set-up
playground equipment due to arrive
at the school Friday, July 22.
Volunteers will be needed Friday
after 4 p.m., Saturday beginning at 8
a.m., and again on Monday after 4
p.m.

Named for the founder of Lions
Clubs International, Melvin Jones,
the fellowship is the foundation’s
highest honor. It is a recognition of
a commitment to humanitarian ser
vice.
Pickerrell is a former city manager
of Southport and has been a member
of the Southport Lions Club since
1966, serving as its president in
1968-69 and 1975-76.
Hilliard is a retired special agent
with the Federal Bureau of Investi
gation and Brunswick County
magistrate. He has been a member
of die Southport Lions Club since
1985, serving in many capacities in
cluding club secretary.
Both men recently received a pla
que and lapel pin acknowledging
their dedication to the foundation’s
humanitarian goals. As Melvin
Jones Fellows, these Lions become
part of a growing network of indi
viduals who are "committed to im
proving the quality of life for people
locally and in communities around
the world," it was noted.
Lions Clubs International is the
world’s largest service club organi
zation, numbering more than 1.4
million members. As the charitable
arm of the association, Lions Clubs
International Foundation acts as
steward of the financial resources
that are disbursed for humanitarian
causes.
‘Section 404’ seminar
is scheduled August 2
Long Beach United for Progress
will sponsor a seminar on Section
404 of the federal Clean Water Act
Tuesday, August 2,7:30 p.m., at the
Long Beach Recreation Center.
Speakers will include G. Wayne
Wright, chief of the regulatory
branch of the U. S. Army Corps of
Engineers; Ernie Jahnke, the corps’
Wilmington Regulatory Field Office
manager; and Rudi Schiener, project
manager for permit matters in
Brunswick County.

Cancer Society’s "Jail & Bail" on
Tuesday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m.
Southport and Brunswick County
business leaders and government of
ficials have agreed to be "arrested"
for the cause and will be summoned
to appear before a fictitious judge
who will set their bail. The "jail
birds" will remain in a makeshift jail
in Dosher’s conference room until
they raise their bail money by call
ing friends, family, co-workers and
contacts asking for donations to the
American Cancer Society.
Radio station WWQQ will broad
cast from the site that morning to
update listeners on who’s been "ar
rested and released."

Tutor workshop
The Brunswick County Literacy
Council will conduct a tutor work
shop Friday, July 22, from 6 to 9:30
p.m., continuing Saturday from 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.
The ten-hour workshop famil
iarizes participants with the Laubach
Way to Reading, a phonics-based
method of instruction.
The workshop is free, but
participants should bring a bag
lunch for the Saturday session. The
workshop will be held at the literacy
council office at Supply.
The trainer will be Joan Altman.
