New Pigskin Picks leader
Isenberg in first place
There is a new leader in the Pilot
Pigskin Picks this week.
It took several weeks to climb that
hill but Southport attorney Mike
Isenberg has surpassed Southport
Oak Island Realtor Margaret Rudd
for the lead by one game. Rudd has
held the position over her male chal
lengers since the picks began seven
weeks ago.
Isenberg used an 8-2 week to
claim top spot while Rudd slipped to
a 6-4 ballot. Isenberg missed the
Texas last-second win over Virginia
and Notre Dame’s defeat of
Southern Cal.
It drops Rudd into a tie for second
place with Pilot editor Ed Harper,
who was one of four pickers with an
8-2 record last week. Harper missed
the same scores as Isenberg. There is
a heated three-way battle for first,
and the standings Could all change
this week with a slate of tough picks.
Rudd even chose against her
favorite, N. C. State, and lost on that
deal when the Wolfpack actually
upended the Duke Bluedevils. She
also missed Notre Dame’s win.
incorrectly picked Maryland to
knock off Clemson and predicted
Stanford would stop UCLA.
State Farm Insurance agent
Dwight Flanagan is heating up the
charts. He had an 8-2 record, miss
ing only the Notre Dame and UC'I.A
games. He is tied for sixth place.
Pilot municipal editor Richard
Nubel was the other 8-2 picker this
week, missing just the Notre Dame
score and Maryland’s loss to
Clemson.
Nubel is just two games behind the
leader this week. Tied for sixth place
are WWAY TV-3 sports anchor
Gene Motley and Flanagan. Motley
had a .500 week and missed all
three Atlantic Coast Conference
games on the chart.
Tied for seventh place are Leland
resident Nelson Best and Pilot sports
editor George Cox. The Notre Dame
and Southern Cal game fooled
everyone but Cox. Best had a 6-4
week when he sided with Duke over
State. Southern Cal, Maryland and
Stanford.
In last place is Pilot county editor
Terry Pope.

the weight room, on the field, in the
film room and on the sidelines.
The South coach started at ground
zero by turning the attitudes of his
players in a new direction — first by
setting a new standard of player
conduct on and off the field.
No bad language, no temper
tantrums. Inappropriate behavior
wasn’t tolerated. It was all done in
Force’s quiet, effective way.
The South football program has
come a long way and a playoff berth
is a real possibility with Pender and
West Brunswick ahead in the next
two weeks. Also at stake is the
school’s fourth winning season
since 1982.
No matter how this season ends,
though, the Cougar football players
can hold their heads high under the
leadership of an excellent coaching
staff.
The program is a class act from
top to bottom.
Adam Kaufhold took it hard to the goal Tuesday, scoring five of South
Brunswick’s goals in a 6-0 win over North Brunswick. As conference
champions the Cougars meet Havelock in the state playoff first round
at 4 p.m. Saturday in Smithville Township Park.
Force pleased with his team’s defensive play

to like.”
The Cougars didn’t have a lot of
their own faithful in the stands -
maybe 50 or so. But since it was
homecoming, the South Columbus
bleachers were filled with plenty of
Stallion partisans.
Force was pleased with the play of
his defense, which has played
almost flawlessly for the past two
weeks.
“We didn’t move the ball well
offensively, but the field conditions
had a lot to do with it. We were very
limited with what we could do.”
Force said his team “relaxed a lit
tle too much at halftime,” contend
ing his team had its way for practi
cally the entire first half.
The Cougars went into the locker
room after two quarters with a 12-0
advantage.
“I knew South Columbus wasn’t
going to quit,” he noted. “They’re
too good a football team. I felt we
had to come out and play well in the
second half, but we didn’t do too
much on offense.”
One down and two to
so: South in the hunt
By George Cox
Sports Editor
One down and two to go.
After a successful first leg of
hopefully a three-game victory jour
ney to the state 3A football playoffs,
South Brunswick’s football Cougars
travel to meet Pender Friday in
another must-win game.
A win against Pender (0-4, 2-7)
would set up a season-ending show
down against West Brunswick at
Jack Campbell Stadium in Boiling
Spring Lakes next week to decide
the league title and 3A playoff spot.
“We can’t take Pender lightly,
that’s for sure,” Cougar coach
Derrell Force said. “They have some
sjieed. Hopefully, our kids aren’t
going to look past Pender on to West
Brunswick because we can’t do
The Cougar coach’s biggest
headache is the kind of day his
youngsters will have Friday away
from their daily routines at school.
It’s a teacher workday — a nightmare
for coaches on game days.
“That’s a concern for me all day,”
Force said. “Some of the kids like to
hunt. We may bring them in or feed
them early or something and hang
around with them. We’ll do some
thing.”
Force said his team has played two
good football games in a row with
victories over 4A Pinecrest (20-7)
and South Columbus (12-8).
“We just can’t have a letdown
now,” he said. “We have to get
sharper1 every week. Hopefully,
we’ll have more success next week
and not get anybody hurt.”
West Brunswick (4-0,6-3) plays at
West Columbus Friday. Coach Yogi
Hickman’s Trojans are hoping to
win their final two games against the
Vikings and Cougars to make the
state playoffs for the fifth straight
season.
The West Brunswick coach will
also attempt to guard against a let
down. County grid fans are already
anticipating a Cougars-Trojans sea
son finale.
North Brunswick’s Scorpions (1
3, 5-3) can assure their second win
ning season in the school’s 24-year
history with a homecoming victory
Friday night against Red Springs.
The Scorpions are coming off two
heartbreaking losses against St.
Pauls (33-32) and Bladenboro (17
12). Coach Garry Bishop should
have his team primed and ready for
this one.
