Oprah Winfrey is making life dif
ficult for Rob Gandy.
No, the city manager works until 5
p.m. every day and is not disturbed
by the famed hostess' 4 p.m. televi
sion show. But, Harpo Films, the talk
diva's production company, has asked
to begin shooting parts of a four-hour
mini-series in Southport next month
and Gandy has not yet been presented
with a film policy that is still under
consideration by a committee of citi
zens.

Commissioners have pulled a fire
district tax plan from the ashes and
hope this time a government-based
committee rather than a citizens
panel will offer the solution to bet
ter fund volunteer departments.
“The way the numbers were de
rived, it wasn’t actual and factual
l umbers,” said District 2 commis
sioner David Sandifer of Holden
Beach on the countywide flat-rate

tions from a smorgasbord of options
provided by new consulting engi
neers. Yaupon Beach commissioners
have once again focused on the Oak
Island Golf and Country Club as the
singular solution to the town's waste
water disposal problem.
Meeting Monday night, commis
sioners shifted their attention away
from plans to spray treated wastewa
ter on tracts of seven and 11 acres the
town either owns or has access to in
the Southeast Brunswick Sanitary
District near the Yaupon Beach waste
water treatment plant. Instead, board
members directed engineers from The
Wooten Company to prepare a feasi
bility study for spraying effluent from
the town's wastewater treatment plant
