Brunswick Concert Band conductor Paul Pittenger is retiring after 12 years of service to 'th^hand and'wili
e replaced by four-year band member Jean Willett. Pittenger has been named conductor emeritus and will

Founding conductor
Pittenger passes baton
as county band leader
By Holly Edwards
Feature Editor
Twelve years after he founded the
Brunswick Concert Band, Paul
Pittinger has retired his conductor's
position because, he says, he no
longer has the “stamina.”
“It takes a tremendous amount of
concentration, energy and stamina
to be a conductor,” he said. “And
when I hit my 70s 1 started going
downhill noticeably. Not dramati
cally, but noticeably.”
The 71-year-old Southport resi
dent says he now will devote more
time to his other passion -- writing
short stories, poetry and memoirs.
Jean Willett of Long Beach, a
trumpet player and four-year veter
an of the band, has volunteered to
replace Pittinger.
Pittinger was named conductor
emeritus by the Brunswick Concert
Band Board of Directors this week
and says he will make occasional
appearances.
“1 don't see this as a transition, but
a continuation of everything Paul
started,” Willett said. “1 feel like
he's built a real strong foundation
for the band and I’d like to see us
continue to grow in that direction."
There may not be any major
changes in band performances, but
both Pittinger and Willett agree that

‘No two conduc

is that each perfor

Paul Pittenger
every conductor is unique.
A conductor’s primary role is to
interpret a piece of music on an
emotional level and help the musi
cians convey that emotion to the
audience, Pittinger explained. And,
he said, every conductor has a
unique way of conveying emotion.
“There are little nuances I've
picked up over the years, and these
nuances are different for each con
ductor,” he said. “No two conduc
tQrs do things the same way, and
what I love about live performances
is that each performance is differ
ent.”
Willett has served as conductor for
the band occasionally for several
years, so she said band members
already are accustomed to her own
nuances.

Pittinger said the original band
practiced every week for two years
before band members felt comfort
able enough to perform before an
audience for the first time, at
Franklin Square Park in 1988.
Band members currently are
preparing for their annual spring
concert at the Brunswick Com
munity College Odell William-son
Auditorium on Sunday, May 3.
Rehearsals are held every Tues
day. 7 p.m., at the CP&L Media
Center. Both Pittinger and Willett
said the band is always seeking new
members.
"The age range in the band is teens
to 80-something year olds."
Pittinger said. "Anyone can come
out and join us."
