S. Savings Bond and sec ond-place winner Cody Knox of Bolivia a $50 bond. Both winners are competing at the district level. Elks’ ‘Americanism’ essay contest judged Imone Clemmons of Southport submitted the following winning essay in this year’s Oak Island Elks Lodge “Americanism” essay contest: The American Flag Protection Amendment A Right of the People, The Right Thing To Do The American flag means a lot to me. It stands for freedom, peace, power, love and justice. Freedom is most important because it has changed the world tremendously and has a great effect on our lives. People like Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Abe Lincoln have contributed a great deal to freedom. The reason I say freedom is most important to me, as .African-Americans we have come a long way from not being free, to becoming free. The second most important is love. The people who were slaves have shown a great amount of love, compassion and forgiveness because they cared so much. We no longer have to be segregated or treated differently because of the color of our skin. I think anyone who wants to bum the flag should be punished. Burning the flag shows disrespect and ungratefulness for the changes the slaves have made. If you Care anything about our country you should do all you can to treat the flag with great respect, and approve 100 percent of the amendment. I would never do anything to disrespect the flag, because I think it’s very dumb. It represents and means too much for me to do something like that. Therefore, I think they should enforce the Flag Protection Amendment in the United States.
