Sea Notes to perform
in concert March 29
Sea Notes Choral Society will pre
sent its spring concert Sunday,
March 29, 3 p.m., at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church near Southport.
The musical selections for the
concert include works of three
diverse styles. The first half of the
concert will consist of works by
Felix Mendelssohn. First on the pro
gram will be “Hear My Prayer,” fea
turing Mrs. Carmen Coles as sopra
no soloist. Selected choruses from
“Elijah” will follow to complete the
Mendelssohn segment.
The second half will include
music written by two of America’s
finest musicians, Randall Thompson
and William L. Dawson. Selections
from lYve “^fost^ana*' series
ing poems by Ttobert Frost and “The
Last Words of David” will be
Thompson’s contribution to the con
cert. Dawson will “get the spirit
moving” as, the group performs
three of his spirituals, including
“Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit” fea
turing basso soloist Billy Peele. -i
Soprano soloist Carmen Coles’
talents are well-known. She has
been director of Sea Notes several
times and is the choir director at
Cape Fear Alliance Church. She has
participated in local theatrical pro
ductions, performing as Queen
Isabella in “Christopher Columbus,
His Story,” Maria in “The Sound of
Music,” Josephine in “HMS
Pinafore” and others. Her also has
performed with the North Carolina
Symphony String Ensemble. Mrs.
Coles received her bachelor’s
degree in music from Gardner
Webb University.

ever, is taking to the keyboards as
the group’s accompanist for this

Dr. Charles Ellington of Southport
is leaving the group’s tenor section
to serve as director. Ellington’s edu
cation and experience is extensive.
He received his bachelor of music
and master of music degrees from
Westminster Choir College, a Ph.D.
in music education from Florida
State University and studied in
France and the Netherlands in
applied voice and repertoire, His
faculty appointments have been at
CedarviUe College, Bob Jones
VJmversity, “Snead College and
Mercer University. He has served as
minister of music in several states
and has appeared as conductor and
soloist in most of the mid-Atlantic
and southern states.
Sea Notes Choral Society is par
tially funded by the Brunswick Arts
Council with funds from the
Grassroots Program of the North
Carolina Arts Council. The group
does not charge admission to any of
its concerts, but depends heavily on ■
contributions from the community.
‘Godspell’
is presented
by Theatre
Brunswick Little Theatre will pre
sent “Godspell” at the Centennial
Center in Southport on Friday and
Saturday, April 3-4, 8 p.m., and
Sunday, April 5, 3 p.m.
